Today begins the 2024 International Free Agent Signing Period. Per Baseball America, the Mets are rumored to sign 3 players in the top 100 (subscription required):
"5. Yovanny Rodriguez, C, Venezuela: Born: Nov. 7, 2006. Bats Right/Throws Right...For some scouts, Rodriguez is the top catcher available to sign in 2024 and on par with the elite catchers who have come out of Venezuela in recent years. He’s a true catcher who draws strong reviews for his defense...with a chance to develop into a 20-plus home run threat..."
"40. Edward Lantigua, OF, Dominican Republic. Born: Nov. 3, 2006. Bats Right/Throws Right...Early on, Lantigua was a skinny line-drive hitter who showed good bat-to-ball skills with gap power. As he has started to fill out, Lantigua is starting to show more power with what should be significantly more juice still to come, while typically performing well against live pitching. Lantigua is an above-average runner who has a chance to stay in center field..."
"77. Yensi Rivas, SS, Dominican Republic (Mets) Switch-hitting shortstop with a mature offensive approach for his age, high contact frequency with nimble footwork in the field."
NY Post: The 17-year-old international prospect, son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero and brother of Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr., is expected to sign with the Mets in January for about $120,000, sources told The Post’s Joel Sherman...'He’s a very interesting prospect, bat first as there’s plus-impact potential — above-average bat speed with potential plus-raw power as well...There’s thunder in those from the left-hand side.'”
Bob Nightengale USA Today: "The Mets are poised to do what the Dodgers did this winter by reaching deep into their wallets a year from now with $70 million in dead contracts to Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander and James McCann coming off their books...Pardon the Mets for hoping that Verlander doesn’t pitch 140 innings this season for the Astros, which would trigger a $35 million option that vests in 2025. And if it vests, the Mets will have to pay half of the contract at $17.5 million."
