Joel Sherman NY Post: Mets are stuck in complicated Pete Alonso limbo entering walk year. Joel looks at big contracts awarded to first basemen in the past and makes this observation: "In many of the cases for large first base contracts, there was a motivating desperation by ownership to do a deal. But since then the general industry practice is to ignore the desperation, because contracts like those of, for example, Miguel Cabrera and Albert Pujols aged so poorly with thickening corner bodies regressing in production in their 30s...So we wait to see if Alonso performs well to force the Mets/Cohen to reassess? If he still gets traded? If the voice of the fanbase influences a decision?"
Steve Serby NY Post: Mets greats Dwight Gooden, Darryl Strawberry talk navigating lowest points: ‘Helped save my life’. After Dwight received 2 DUIs in a week in 2019, Darryl went to see him as Dwight recalled "He said I didn’t look good, I didn’t look healthy, he didn’t like the way that I looked. I needed to hear that, because I was in total denial. I was around a lot of people that were telling me things that I wanted to hear. Basically, it helped save my life, and turned me around."
MLB Network on YouTube talks to Darryl about number retirement.
