Jim Bowden The Athletic: 40 young MLB players and prospects I’m most excited to scout in spring training.  Two Mets make his list - Francisco Alvarez "Alvarez’s power is real and if he gets to be the full-time catcher of the Mets this season, I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t belt 30 home runs or more. (He had 25 homers last season.) However, he struggled in other ways as a hitter last year, batting only .209 with a .284 on-base percentage and a 95 OPS+. He struck out 47 times in 202 at-bats against a fastball and 41 times in 128 at-bats against a breaking ball...Behind the plate, Alvarez continues to improve defensively...I believe he’ll develop into an All-Star catcher."

And Luisangel Acuña, "The 21-year-old middle infielder slashed .294/.359/.410 last year in Double A with 28 doubles and 57 stolen bases. (He was caught stealing 10 times.) He profiles as a future table-setter who plays with high energy and enthusiasm." (Subscription required)

The Athletic: Mets fan survey results: Disappointing season, quiet offseason lead to uncertainty.  For the third year in a row, the Athletic took a survey of Mets fans.  3000 fans responded.  Responses included: "What was your favorite moment of the 2023 season? …when it ended 33.4% When did you check out of the 2023 season? I watched until the bitter end. 49.6%...Almost 70 percent of respondents placed the blame, in some portion, on the players. There probably isn’t much need for distinguishing among them: Most everyone on the Mets last season underperformed....Do you think the Mets were right to fire Buck Showalter? No 48.2% Yes 26.8% Yes, but David Stearns should have waited a day to do it in person 25.1%" (Subscription required)

The Mets avoid salary arbitration with John Maine (10-8, 4.18) when both sides agree to a $2.6 million, one-year deal. The 25 year-old right-handed starter, who missed the last five weeks of the season due to an injury to his pitching shoulder, is expected to play a significant role this year in the team's pitching rotation.

Baseball Reference.com:

1962 - The New York Mets sign Gil Hodges for $33,000. The veteran first baseman had been languishing on the Dodgers' bench for the past two seasons.

1984 - After failing to trade him, the New York Mets give veteran slugger Dave Kingman his release. Kingman hit .198 with 13 home runs last year, but will find a new home as designated hitter with the Oakland Athletics, hitting 35 home runs this year, ranking second behind American League leader Tony Armas, who will finish with 43.
