Today's Game:

6:05 PM at Houston;

Mets Scheduled Pitchers: LHP Jose Quintana, RHP Tylor MegillRHP Yohan Ramírez, RHP Cole Sulser;

Tim Healey Newsday: Mets' Starling Marte makes a short and sweet spring-training debut. "Playing for the Mets for the first time since a brief cameo last August, Marte manned rightfield for three innings, fielded zero balls and raced through two at-bats on four pitches: a first-pitch flyout to the warning track and a three-pitch strikeout...In his quest to reestablish himself as an everyday player following a 2023 season plagued by his poor recovery from groin surgery, his appearance in a 3-0 win over the Cardinals marked another step forward....Antoan Richardson, the Mets’ new outfield coach, said: 'He seems motivated and is moving around really well . . . In this camp, the energy has been very high and he’s been awesome to work with.'”

David Lennon Newsday: For Jose Quintana, a much different spring with Mets. "...if all goes according to plan — and that’s a big if when talking about the Mets — Quintana will be on the mound Opening Day at Citi Field, the fourth different pitcher to get that prestigious assignment for the franchise in as many years...new manager Carlos Mendoza...helped develop Quintana when the two were with the Yankees a dozen years ago on the low minor-league side in Tampa. Mendoza said that he and Jose Rosado, now the Mets’ bullpen coach, helped Quintana master a changeup, the pitch that he said catapulted his career."

Mike Puma NY Post: Darryl Strawberry: Mets doing ‘exactly’ what we did before last World Series. “[Stearns] is doing exactly what Frank did,” Strawberry said. “When I look at some of the things he’s done this offseason and the way most want to criticize him, saying he’s not doing a good job … he’s doing a good job because he is looking at the future of the New York Mets. He’s looking at the talent and he’s looking at the current team, what the needs are — which is good because your owner has a lot of money but he’s not throwing it away.”

Joel Sherman NY Post: Why Mets are bullish on Starling Marte as age, injury concerns loom. “'When you’re that type of athlete and then when you have your midsection kind of taken away from you [due to the surgery], it zapped his power, his explosiveness and running speed,' hitting coach Eric Chavez said. 'Everything that makes him athletic was completely taken away. It’s almost like he has a new toy back. The explosiveness is back.'”

Mike Puma NY Post: Good-natured ribbing has Jett Williams building strong Mets rapport. "Much of the jesting, according to Williams, has originated from bench coach John Gibbons, wondering why the 20-year-old shortstop isn’t starting...'I have been comfortable enough to communicate with Mendoza and all of the coaching staff,' Williams said. 'I think that’s good even before I come up [to the Mets], because that means when I do get the opportunity to come up here, I will be comfortable and I can just bring my game.'"

Andy Martino SNY.TV: Mets, who nearly signed Julio Teheran this week, still need pitching depth. "Teheran’s agreement with Baltimore, a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training, contains an opt-out on March 25, according to a person familiar with that deal.  The Mets will monitor that because Teheran nearly chose them in the first place -- although Baltimore’s decision to give Teheran a $100,000 signing bonus, which is unusually high for a non-roster invitee, would seem to indicate that the Orioles expect him to stick."

Tim Britton and Will Sammon The Athletic: The Mets have been in touch with free-agent starters. Should they add to their rotation? "The New York Mets have recently checked in on free-agent starters, including Michael Lorenzen, league sources said, though the communication likely reflects a desire to stay connected if they have another injury rather than imminent, serious interest."
