Tim Healey Newsday: J.D. Martinez, Mets agree to one-year deal, source says. "They agreed to a one-year, $12 million contract with J.D. Martinez, pending a physical, people familiar with the deal said. That marked their first major offensive addition since the end of last season, a boon to their lineup and thus their playoff chances just a week before Opening Day...In the immediate aftermath of the agreement, the Mets still were working through whether Martinez, who has not been in a spring training camp, would be ready for the season-opener next Thursday, a source said."

John Harper SNY.TV: Signing J.D. Martinez was a move Mets had to make to be taken seriously in 2024, "NL scout: 'I believe Pete Alonso will definitely get better pitches to hit'...At age 36, J.D. Martinez shouldn’t be viewed as any kind of savior, but he certainly could be a difference-maker for a lineup that was desperate for a proven run-producer. Kudos, then, to David Stearns, not just for signing Martinez on Thursday night, but doing it on his terms...one year and $12 million, which is actually less overall because the deal includes deferred money that softens the luxury-tax cost."

David Lennon Newsday Mets owner Steve Cohen looked for value and found it in J.D. Martinez. By playing this winter’s free-agent market like a hand of Texas hold ’em, Cohen got to make good on both of those pledges and upgrade a position that has inexplicably tormented the Mets over the past few seasons.

Mike Puma NY Post: Mets’ Kodai Senga expected to throw again ‘soon’ after recent MRI. Mets Manager Carlos "Mendoza added that Senga will undergo testing by the team medical staff to measure his shoulder strength before he begins throwing. Senga indicated he would likely begin throwing next week. Once he begins his buildup, Senga will need at least six weeks before he can join the Mets’ rotation."

NY Post: Brett Baty wins Mets’ third base battle to open season. Baty impressed team officials in a game this week in which he homered, and stayed on another pitch against a left-hander and delivered with a single to left field. 'He needs to simplify his mechanical adjustments, keeping his hitting sights or aim relentlessly to the middle of the field,' a scout said. 'He is very close to making the necessary key adjustments to hit, and then he’ll take off for primer years of his career offensively.'”

1962

In the first meeting between the two New York clubs, the Mets defeated the World Champion Yankees in a spring training game with a dramatic walk-off 4-3 victory at Al Lang Field. Casey Stengel, the former skipper of the Bronx Bombers, now the expansion team's manager, clearly wanting to beat his old club, calls upon veteran Richie Ashburn, who delivers a ninth-inning pinch-hit single for the Amazins'.

1962

Roger Maris declines to pose with Mets coach Rogers Hornsby because the veteran had criticized him in the recently published autobiography, My Wars with Baseball. In the book, the 65-year-old Hall of Famer dismisses the Yankees slugger as a mediocre hitter who couldn't bat .400 even with all of his averages added up.

Baseball Reference:

1963 - The New York Mets, who finished last in the National League with a 40-120 record in their inaugural season, purchase pitcher Carl Willey from the Milwaukee Braves. Willey will boost a pitching rotation that includes Roger CraigAl Jackson and Tracy Stallard. The Mets will improve to 51-111 this season.

1997: The New York Mets, loaded with middle infielders, add two more, acquiring shortstop Manny Alexander and third baseman Scott McClain from the Baltimore Orioles. The Mets give up hard-throwing reliever Hector Ramirez in exchange.

2015 - Yankees prospect Jose Pirela runs into the center field fence at full speed in trying to chase down a drive off the bat of the Mets' Juan Lagares. He suffers a concussion and has to be taken to hospital, but escapes more serious injury. Meanwhile, Lagares circles the bases with an inside-the-park home run.
