Thornton gives up just 1 hit over 5.0 innings

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 26, 2024) – The St. Lucie Mets pitched their second shutout in four games, blanking the Daytona Tortugas 2-0 on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark (Box Score). 

Mets starter Zach Thornton allowed a hit to the first batter he faced then did not give up another hit over 5.0 impressive innings. Thornton walked two and struck out six on his way to earning the win. He retired the final nine batters he faced. 

Jawilme Ramirez pitched the next 3.0 innings. He also gave up just one hit. Ramirez stranded the tying run in scoring position with a 2-0 lead in the eighth inning. 

Alan Perdomo pitched around a leadoff double in the ninth to get his first save in the Mets organization. He struck out Carlos Sanchez to end the game and stranded a runner at third base to preserve the shutout. 

The Mets scored the only two runs of the game in the second inning on an error. With two outs and runners at second and third, Fabian Machado battled Daytona starter Juan Martinez to a full count. Machado grounded a ball to Sanchez at short and Sanchez threw the ball away, allowing Chris Suero and Yohairo Cuevas to score. Suero reached base on a two-out double and Cuevas followed with a walk. 

Nick Morabito went 3 for 4 with a double. He improved his FSL-leading average to .387. 

Marco Vargas went 2 for 4 with two stolen bases in his first game off the 7-day IL. 

Suero's double extended his hitting streak to six games. He has four doubles in the series. 

Mets starting pitchers have given up just three earned runs over 22.0 innings through four games in the current series. They have combined to allow just 10 hits with 31 strikeouts. 

The Mets (9-10) and Tortugas (10-9) play the fifth game of their series at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
