Syracuse, NY – The Syracuse Mets kept the good times rolling on Friday night, scoring 10 of the game's final 12 runs on their way to a 12-5 win over the Iowa Cubs (Triple-A affiliate, Chicago Cubs) on a sunny and warm mid-May evening at NBT Bank Stadium. The Mets have now three out of the first four games in the series and eight out of their last 10 games overall.
Early on, it was the Trayce Thompson show for Syracuse (25-16), as his pair of solo home runs in the second and fourth stoked the Mets to a 2-0 lead. Thompson had also homered in Tuesday night's game. Dom Hamel looked great early on in his start for the Mets, tossing the first four frames in scoreless fashion on just one hit. However, the fifth inning proved to be his downfall. Iowa (20-23) chased Hamel from the game with a patient eye – by the end of the inning, the Cubs had scored three runs without a single hit. They drew five walks and a batter was also hit in the inning, allowing three runs to come across home and hand the Cubs a 3-2 lead. Hamel's final line was four and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on just one hit but with four walks and four strikeouts.
From there, it was all in favor of the home team. They scored the next 10 runs to roar out to a 12-3 lead and make sure the Cubs never got close again. The scoring was remarkably clutch, as seven of those 10 runs came on two-out hits. In the fifth, Luke Ritter smacked a two-out, two-run double to give the Mets a 4-3 lead. In the sixth, Carlos Cortes lined a two-out, two-run double of his own to the left-field wall to make it 6-3. Then in the seventh, Hayden Senger put the capper on one of the best games of his professional baseball career. His bases-clearing, three-run triple put the game out of reach at 9-3 and gave him three extra-base hits on the night. He had also doubled in the fifth and sixth innings respectively.
The fun wasn't done. In the bottom of the eighth, Thompson did it yet again, crushing a three-run homer way beyond the left-field wall for his third big fly of the night and a 12-3 lead for the home team. Remarkably, the Mets have now had two different three-homer games this week alone. Mike Brosseau also hit three home runs in Tuesday night's game. Entering this week, only 16 players had ever hit three or more home runs in a game in the history of Syracuse professional baseball. Brosseau and Thompson have now done it twice in one week alone.
While the offense was roaring, the bullpen was once again turning out the lights for the opposition. Four pitchers (Danny Young, Tyler Jay, Eric Orze, and Dedniel Núñez) allowed just two earned runs on five hits in the final three and one-thirds innings with five more strikeouts. The Mets bullpen has made sure time and again this season that things don't go haywire in the late innings. Syracuse has still yet to lose a game this season that they lead after seven innings of play.
Syracuse is finally home after two long weeks on the road. This week's series against the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, the Iowa Cubs, continues on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. from NBT Bank Stadium.
