From the Mets 11 Padres 6 Post Game Notes - 6/16/2024:

  • Mets: Picked up their fifth series sweep of the season...Was their first sweep of the Padres since August 8-10, 2006 at Shea Stadium...Have won five straight games, one shy of matching their longest winning streak of the season (4/14-4/20)...Their five straight wins at home is their longest home winning streak of the season...Was their fourth game with 10 or more runs this season and second this homestand (Also: 6/12 vs. Miami)...Their 11 runs today were their most in a home game this season.
  • Francisco Lindor: Put the Mets on the board with a lead-off homer...Was his 19th career lead-off home run and his first since September 3, 2019 at Chicago-AL (Also off Dylan Cease).
  • Harrison Bader: Lofted an RBI double in the fourth...Has seven extra-base hits and 13 RBI over his last 17 games.
  • Brandon Nimmo: Recorded an RBI single in the eighth...Has two or more hits in three straight games and five such games this month.
  • Tylor Megill: Is 8-5 with a 3.06 ERA (30 ER/89.0 IP) in 17 home starts since 2023...Has allowed only one home run through his first 30.2 innings
  • J.D. Martinez: Extended his on-base streak to 20 games after drawing a walk in the first...Is the first Met to reach base in 20 straight games since Mark Canha reached base in 22 straight games from September 4, 2022 - September 30, 2022...Laced an RBI double in the fourth...Has 18 extra-base hits since May 11.
  • Pete Alonso: Launched a three-run homer in the first..Drove in two runs with a single in the eighth....Has nine career games with five or more RBI, the second-most such games in franchise history behind only David Wright (10).
  • Luis Torrens: Slugged a solo home run in the eighth...Was his first Mets home run at Citi Field...Has a 1.148 OPS in his first eight games with the club.
  • First Inning: Scored four runs before making an out...Was the first time the club scored four runs before making an out since September 12, 2009 at Philadelphia (Does not include when fourth run was scored on an out)...Courtesy of Elias.

Brian Joura Mets360: “Trailing 1-0, Francisco Lindor led off the bottom of the first and homered to tie things up. Brandon Nimmo singled, followed by a J.D. Martinez walk and a Pete Alonso homer to make it 4-1 before they made an out.”

NY Post: Mets' offense explodes with 11-run outburst to complete sweep of Padres “Carlos Mendoza’s group knocked out 14 hits total — every member of the starting lineup reached base — and scored seven times in the first four innings, building a sizable lead that they would need because of a shaky relief corps.”

NY Post: Mets’ Tylor Megill starting to finally hitting stride after another solid outing “…with Sunday just his sixth start of the season after suffering a shoulder strain in his first outing back in March…Five starts post-return and Megill’s ERA is sitting at 3.52 — a career-best by nearly a full run.”

Anthony Rieber Newsday: Mets erupt for 11 runs to sweep Padres and earn fifth straight win. [In the 8th]…“It was 7-6. With Kim on second, Luis Arraez lined a two-out single to right. Marte, back in the lineup after missing a game with a knee injury, fired a strike to the plate, and Kim did not dare to try to score.  Smith then struck out Fernando Tatis Jr. to end the inning.”

NY Post: Historic Mets on-base streak by J.D. Martinez ended against Padres “Finally, after 10 tries, the Padres got J.D. Martinez out…Since [being struck out on Friday in the 6th]…he had walked five times, hit two home runs, doubled and singled twice.”

David Lennon Newsday: It took a while, but Mets are looking pretty legitimate these days. Finally, the Mets are doing what they were designed to do. Cohen OK’d the last-minute signing of Martinez because he figured the elite DH could be a difference-maker...In the past five games, Martinez is hitting .500 (9-for-18) with three doubles, three homers, five walks and nine RBIs.

NY Post: Unheralded Mets catcher extends tear with pivotal blast vs. Padres “To begin the bottom of the eighth, Luis Torrens got a 2-1, 98 mph fastball from fireballer Jeremiah Estrada and smoked it 403 feet to center, just clearing the wall for his third home run of the season and some valuable insurance.”

1962

In a play that is indicative of the struggling Mets, first baseman Marv Throneberry's apparent first-inning triple becomes an out on an appeal play for missing second base in an 8-7 loss to the Cubs at the Polo Grounds. When New York manager Casey Stengel questions the call, he is told by the umpire, according to legend, "Don't bother arguing, Casey, he missed first base, too."

1962

Gene Woodling becomes the first major leaguer to play for both the Yankees and the Mets. In his National League debut, the 38 year-old outfielder goes 2-for-4, scoring two runs for the new expansion team in an 8-7 loss to the Cubs at the Polo Grounds.

1974

After completing the first 1000 games in franchise history with a winning percentage of .332, the Mets compile a 517-482-1 record in their next thousand contests. During the span, that includes Tom Seaver winning 12% of the team's victories, New York wins two National League pennants and a World championship.

1976

At Shea Stadium, Dave Kingman hits a walk-off homer to give the Mets a 1-0 victory over the Dodgers. Sky King's game-ending blast comes off Charlie Hough in the 14th inning.

2003

Mets starter Jae Seo and two relief pitchers, David Weathers and Armando Benitez, combine to one-hit Florida, 5-0. The contest is the third consecutive one-hitter the team has played; Steve Trachsel limited the Angels to one single two days ago, and last night, Dontrelle Willis beat New York, 1-0, yielding just one safety.

2005

In a 13-6 loss to Cleveland, the Diamondbacks become the first team since 1969 to allow ten runs in an inning in consecutive games. The eventual 1969 World Champion Mets accomplished the dubious feat in just one day when Houston swept a doubleheader at Shea Stadium.

2008

After a 9-6 victory against the Angels in the first game of a West Coast road trip, the Mets fire manager Willie Randolph, pitching coach Rick Peterson, and first-base coach Tom Nieto, shortly after 3 a.m. Eastern time. The team's 18th manager, who compiled a 302-253 record in 3+ seasons with New York, will be replaced by bench coach Jerry Manuel on an interim basis until the end of the season.

 Baseball Reference:

1962 - Chicago Cubs outfielder Lou Brock hits a home run into the right-center field bleachers at the Polo Grounds, 460 feet from home plate, in the first game of a Chicago doubleheader sweep over the New York Mets, 8 - 7 and 4 - 3. Known more for his speed than his power, Brock becomes the second player to reach that section of seats. Joe Adcock was the first.

2005: Former Red Sox Brian Daubach starts at first base for the Mets, drawing three walks and scoring two runs one day after being called up from Triple-A Norfolk. Daubach was drafted by the Mets in the 17th round way back in 1990, but this is his first big league game for the club.

2009: Matt Wieters of the Baltimore Orioles, the 2008 Minor League Player of the Year, hits the first home run of his career in the O's 6 - 4 win over the New York Mets.
