Brian Joura Mets 360: "If you’re a Pirates fan who likes home runs, this was the game for you! Pittsburgh cracked seven homers en route to a 14-2 win over the Mets Friday night."

Mets jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a Jeff McNeil homer in the 3rd and a Jose Iglesias groundout that brought in Pete Alonso from 3rd in the 4th.  Pirates homered twice in the bottom of the 4th to tie it and jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the 5th on a 2 run homer by Bryan Reynolds to take the led for good.

NY Post: Mets’ pitchers implode in ugly loss as Pirates crush seven homers. "The Mets had such a bad night that the home team didn’t have enough [fireworks] to continue celebrating...Diekman entered after Severino loaded the bases in the seventh with the Mets behind 4-2. The struggling left-hander surrendered a grand slam to Bryan Reynolds that essentially made the eighth-inning carnage a moot point."

Tim Healey Newsday: Mets blown out by Pirates after Luis Severino's worst start of season. "In another winnable game, they trailed by two in the seventh inning. But the bullpen gave up 10 runs in less than two frames, allowing the situation to deteriorate to such an extent that manager Carlos Mendoza turned to a position player for the last out of the eighth."

Rod Kanehl, appearing as a pinch-hitter, hits the first grand slam in Mets history, going deep off Bobby Shantz in the eighth inning of the team's 10-3 victory over the Cardinals at the Polo Grounds. The bases loaded round-tripper comes in the 79th game of the franchise's existence.

1962

In a rare Mets victory, Gil Hodges goes deep off Redbird hurler Ray Sadecki for his 370th and final home run of his career, finishing tenth on the all-time list and with the most round-trippers ever hit by a right-handed batter in the National League. In attendance at the Polo Grounds contest is eight year-old Howie Rose, the future Mets radio voice watching his first major league game, and Ralph Kiner, the play-by-play announcer for the expansion team, who will have the quiet first baseman on his postgame show, Kiner Korner, reminding his guest that the right-handed NL home run mark had been established by him in 1954.

2004

Recently acquired outfielder Richard Hidalgo establishes a club record, homering in five straight games for the Mets. In 16 games with New York, the former Astro has eight home runs, compared to hitting just four with Houston in 56 games.
