From the Reds 3 Mets 1 Post Game Notes - 9/8/2024
Mets:
- Had their nine-game win streak snapped...Was their longest winning streak since April 3 -13, 2018...Was tied for the second-longest winning streak in the majors this season (Also: Cleveland, 5/17-26).
- Was the 22nd game this season they were held to one or no runs.
- Are 11-6 when tied after eight innings.
- Was the ninth time this season New York has stolen three or more bases in a game...Are the most such games in a single season for the Mets since they had 12 such games in 2014.
- Have a major league-leading 20 pickoffs this season...Courtesy of Elias.
- Recorded his first multi-hit game since August 5 at St. Louis...Has 23 multi-hit games this season, tied for his career high (Also: 2018).
- Hit a one run single in the sixth inning to give the Mets a 1-0 lead...Was his 55th RBI against Cincinnati which is tied for his second-most against any opponent.
- Has pitched at least 6.0 innings in six of his last eight home starts...Has given up one or no runs in each of his last three home starts and now has a 0.82 ERA (2 ER/22.2 IP) in those starts...Has allowed two or fewer runs in 11 of his 15 home starts this season.
- Was his fifth start of the season with eight or more strikeouts.
Brian Joura Mets360: "Last Sunday, the Mets pitched a shutout and won 2-0. For a second it looked like they were going to win with an even higher degree of difficulty, as they took a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning. But the Reds tied it in the seventh and scored two more in the ninth. And since a Constitutional Amendment has been passed saying that the Mets are no longer allowed to score more than two runs on Sunday, they fell by the score of 3-1. It snapped their nine-game winning streak and put them back into a tie with the Braves for the third Wild Card spot."
Dan Martin NY Post: Mets’ nine-game win streak ends with a whimper in loss to Reds. "The biggest issue for the Mets on Sunday, though, was the offense, which got just a run in the sixth inning on a two-out RBI single from Starling Marte. But the top five hitters in the lineup combined to go 0-for-16 with three walks and five strikeouts against rookie right-hander Julian Aguiar and five relievers."
Evan Barnes Newsday: Mets waste Luis Severino's strong outing as winning streak ends at 9. "The tough part about streaks? They eventually end. No matter how much joy they bring, it’s only temporary. The Mets got reminded of that after their 3-1 loss to the Reds on Sunday at Citi Field. Their winning streak was snapped at nine games and so was Francisco Lindor’s on-base streak at 35 games."

New York Mets released Darren Reed on September 9, 1993.
1997 | Hall of Famer and beloved Phillies announcer Richie Ashburn, an excellent contact hitter who once fouled off 14 pitches in one at-bat, passes away of an apparent heart attack in his New York hotel room after broadcasting a Mets-Phillies game last night. 'Whitey' collected the most hits by any major leaguer during the decade of the 1950's. |
2004 | Lino Urdaneta's first major league appearance results in an earned run average of infinity when the Tigers rookie does not retire a batter, giving up five hits, one walk, and six earned runs. Fortunately for the right-hander, the Mets will give him the opportunity to appear in two games in 2007, in which he allows one run in one inning of work, to bring down his ERA to a much more respectable 63.00. |

2013 - In a rare highlight for the Nationals this season, Gio Gonzalez pitches a one-hitter and is backed by five homers as the team rolls to an easy 9 - 0 win over the Mets. The Nats start off with a bang as Denard Span and Ryan Zimmerman greet Mets starter Carlos Torres with back-to-back long balls. Pinch-hitter Zach Lutz has the Mets' only hit, a soft single that lands on the first base foul line to open the 7th.
