Tim Healey Kodai Senga's brutal short start sends Mets to NLCS Game 1 loss to Dodgers. "Senga allowed three runs, two hits and four walks in 1 1⁄3 innings. He threw 30 pitches, only 10 of which were strikes. He mixed in a wild pitch and a pitch-clock violation. He forced the Mets to get another pitcher warmed up in the first inning and insert that pitcher in the second."

Brian Joura Mets360: "Many thought that David Peterson should have started this game. But he got hit hard in relief and allowed three runs, too. And Jose Butto completed the three runs allowed trifecta, as the Dodgers scored three times against him, too."

David Lennon Newsday Mets' mojo was nowhere to be found in NLCS Game 1 loss to Dodgers. "Thanks to Kodai Senga’s disastrous start, Flaherty’s surprising dominance and a dash of self-sabotage, the Mets looked almost helpless, their playoff magic gone, in a sobering 9-0 loss to the Dodgers."

Tim Healey Newsday: Three takeaways from the Mets' NLCS Game 1 loss to the Dodgers. "1. More than just the score went against the Mets. 2. In a rare occurrence, the offense looked bad. 3. The Mets lost all of their momentum . . . for now."

Mark W. Sanchez NY Post: Jesse Winker’s baserunning blunder cost Mets lone chance for rally in NLCS Game 1. "Their best chance at scoring halted strangely, with Winker hung up between second and third base, uncertain of where to go, before he did not fully charge to his base of choice to lowlight a 9-0, NLCS Game 1 smacking at Dodger Stadium."

Mike Puma NY Post: Mets routed by Dodgers as Kodai Senga struggles, bats get shut out in NLCS Game 1 flop. "The turnaround will be fast, with Game 2 scheduled for Monday afternoon. Sean Manaea, the Mets’ best starting pitcher for much of this season, will get the call against a bullpen game for the Dodgers (who have thrown 33 straight scoreless innings — matching the postseason record established by the 1966 Orioles, albeit in the World Series)."

1969

Thanks to two great catches by Tommy Agee at Shea Stadium, the Mets beat the Orioles to take a 2-1 game lead in the World Series. The center fielder's outfield heroics save the team at least five runs in the 5-0 victory over Baltimore.

1973

The contest in which Willie Mays gets his last hit, an RBI-single that plates the decisive run in the 12th inning of the Mets' 10-7 victory over the A's in the second game of the World Series, will be best remembered for the aging superstar's misadventures in the outfield when he loses two fly balls in the sun at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. The game takes four-hours and 13 minutes to complete, making it the longest Fall Classic contest ever played.

Baseball Reference:

1969 - Tommie Agee and Ed Kranepool hit home runs, Agee makes two brilliant catches in center field, and the New York Mets blank the Baltimore Orioles, 5 - 0. The underdog Mets take a 2-1 World Series lead.

1973 - The New York Mets win Game 2 of the World Series, 10 - 7, scoring four runs in an 11th inning that features the last major league hit by Willie Mays and two errors by Oakland Athletics second baseman Mike Andrews. Oakland owner Charlie Finley subsequently puts Andrews on the disabled list in a move that will be questioned by commissioner Bowie Kuhn and then reversed.
