Mets Links:

Mike Puma NY Post: Frankie Montas shut down for significant stretch in Mets’ first spring training blow. "Frankie Montas’ triceps soreness following his first bullpen session last week has turned into a rotation vacancy for the Mets to begin the season. The right-hander is dealing with a high-grade lat strain, manager Carlos Mendoza said Monday, and has been shut down from throwing for 6-8 weeks. Once Montas begins throwing again he will need a full spring training buildup, meaning in a best-case scenario he won’t return to the Mets until at least mid-May."

Jon Heyman NY Post Sports+: There’s an obvious fix to the Mets’ suddenly thinning rotation. "Jose Quintana is a guy they all loved last year, and I can’t figure out why they haven’t brought him back already, or frankly, why he doesn’t have any job. The Mets should view this as an opportunity...Quintana might come for around $5M. (Though, the Mets are over the Steve Cohen tax threshold, so with the 110 percent tax, they’d be paying $10.5M.)" SNY.TV: Don't expect Marcus Stroman to land back with Mets after Frankie Montas injury. "Mets plan to use their depth, fill spot internally."

Tim Healey Newsday: Mets' Pete Alonso calls new deal 'a bridge thing just to get to the next contract'. "His recent performance and the qualifying offer depressed his market, he said. And so he settled for a two-year, $54 million pact with the Mets that includes an opt-out clause after the first season. He is slated to become a free agent again after this season or the next one."

NY Daily News: Pete Alonso back where he wants to be with the Mets: ‘I’m just really happy to be back’.

Newsday: Drew Smith excited to return to Mets after Christmas 'understanding'. "There was no contract, no signature, no officialness. But he and the Mets, the only major-league team he has known, came to what he called 'a very good understanding that I’d probably be back.'"

NY Daily News: Mets Notebook: Jeff McNeil feeling like himself again, Drew Smith reports to camp. "Since winning the NL batting title in 2022, McNeil has struggled at the plate, hitting .270 in 2023 and .238 in 2024. But after a power surge in the second half of last season, the Mets utility man is feeling more like his old self again...McNeil has had slow starts at the plate in back-to-back seasons before getting hot in the second half both years. Last season, he hit .289 with a .923 OPS over his last 149 plate appearances with seven home runs and 12 doubles. He stopped trying to do too much in his at-bats and just took what he was given."
