NY Post: Mets prospect Blade Tidwell announces himself with rare immaculate inning. "One of the Mets’ top pitching prospects announced himself Saturday, when he threw an immaculate second inning — nine pitches, nine strikes, three strikeouts — and put on a strike-throwing and bat-missing clinic. In all, Tidwell faced six batters...His sinker nearly touched triple digits, and four other offerings were similarly untouchable."
Today's Game: 1:05 PM at Boston;
Mets Scheduled Pitchers: RHP Paul Blackburn, LHP Brandon Waddell, LHP Anthony Gose, LHP Génesis Cabrera, RHP Rico Garcia, RHP Grant Hartwig.
Blade Tidwell cuts up the Rays with 5 Ks, 6 up, 6 down, including an immaculate inning in the 2nd. Jose Siri a 3-run HR. David Lennon Newsday: Mets' pitching future looks bright with way Brandon Sproat and Blade Tidwell are throwing the ball. "On Friday, it was Sproat’s turn to shine. He pitched two perfect innings against the Nationals and also showed off his electric fastball that repeatedly hit 99 mph. Next was Tidwell, who took the two-hour bus trip to Port Charlotte and heated up fast against the Rays. Seeing those two go back-to-back like that can’t help but conjure memories of the Harvey-deGrom-Syndergaard days, when the Mets figured to have a stable of Cy Young Award candidates for the next decade or more."
Time Healey Newsday: Mets, Kodai Senga find compromise with unusual spring training schedule. "The Mets’ decision-makers...very much preferred to have him stick to the practice fields — a more low-key environment in which he faces players in his own organization... Senga badly wanted to get into a real game, a Grapefruit League game, in a stadium with a crowd and an opposing lineup...On Monday, Senga will pitch the first inning of the Mets’ 6:10 p.m. contest against the Marlins at Clover Park. Then he will head out back for two more simulated innings against Mets batters, maybe minor-leaguers, in live batting practice."
NY Post: Steve Serby had his Sunday Q&A with Jesse Winker. Steve talked to Jesse about Francisco Lindor, playing the villain role and October Baseball in NY which Jess said "I don’t even know if there’s a word to describe it. It’ll give you goosebumps. I’ll talk about it for the rest of my life. It’s a special place, man. It’s loud, it’s bright, it’s incredible. Like you said, it’s electric, man. That’s the word to describe it. You walk on and it’s instant electricity, instant caffeine (laugh). It’s like you don’t even need to drink coffee."
Tim Healey Newsday: Mets have 'decision to make' on new outfielder Alexander Canario. "Over the next several weeks, they’ll ask themselves: Do they like him so much that they will put him on the roster? Canario, 24, is out of minor-league options, so the Mets can’t simply stash him in Triple-A Syracuse once the regular season begins. They might try to sneak him through waivers at a time of year when some clubs don’t have room to claim a player. It is possible that he will make the Opening Day club, even if he doesn’t have an obvious path right now."
Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Mets Notebook: Brandon Nimmo’s new shoes, Kevin Parada’s new look and spring training snakes. Regarding Kevin Parada she notes: "Mets catching prospect Kevin Parada dropped weight over the winter, hoping that a leaner, more athletic build will help him at the plate and behind it. But it’s the signature specs he used to wear that have him looking different in spring training this year. Parada has done away with the glasses, opting for contacts after talking to a doctor...Contacts make it easier for the eye to track a moving target."
SNY.TV: Update on Luisangel Acuña. "Acuña was struck in the elbow by a fastball from Rays starter Shane McClanahan in the top of the second inning. Despite his obvious pain, Acuña remained in the game and stole second base, but was pulled in the top of the third..Mendoza said that Acuña did not take an X-ray and wouldn't be needing any imaging "as of right now."

New York Mets released Joe DePastino on March 2, 2001.
1966 | Commissioner William Eckert, citing a rule that prohibits clubs from signing players during their collegiate season, voids the Braves' contract with USC standout Tom Seaver, who had signed with Atlanta for a $50,000 bonus a week earlier. The Mets will be awarded the future Hall of Famer's signing rights in a lottery that includes the Phillies and Indians, who also were willing to match the Braves' terms. |
1989 | "When he punched Keith Hernandez in spring training last season, it was the only time that Darryl Strawberry hit the cutoff man." - STEVE WULF, Sports Illustrated journalist. At a photo session, Mets' outfielder Darryl Strawberry throws a punch at Keith Hernandez, the team's no-nonsense All-Star first baseman. The spring training scuffle started over comments about salaries and results with the Straw walking out of camp. |
2005: Thirty-two years after his death, Jackie Robinson receives the Congressional Gold Medal in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, the highest honor Congress can bestow. The medal is accepted by Rachel Robinson, his widow. Baseball is represented in a way by former Texas Rangers executive George W. Bush. Robinson joins Roberto Clemente, Joe Louis and Jesse Owens as the only athletes among about 300 Gold Medal recipients. Following the ceremony, the Boston Red Sox are honored at the White House for winning the 2004 World Series.
2005: In the Washington Nationals' first game since moving from Montreal, pitcher Tony Armas, Jr. tosses two hitless innings and Jose Guillen hits a two-run home run as the Nationals post a 5 - 3 triumph over the Mets in the Grapefruit League opener for both teams. The Expos played their first regular-season game against the Mets in 1969 and their last game against the Mets on October 3, 2004. In the first regular-season game between these franchises, Tom Seaver started for the Mets at Shea Stadium and Coco Laboy powered the Expos to an 11 - 10 victory. In their last meeting, Tom Glavine started for the Mets at Shea Stadium and Todd Zeile hit a home run to deal the Expos an 8 - 1 defeat. Wearing their regular-season home uniforms instead of the traditional batting practice spring training jerseys, the Nationals defeat Glavine this time.
2006: Bret Boone retires at the New York Mets training camp, the culmination of a swift decline for a player who was one of baseball's best second basemen only a few years ago.
