Brandon Nimmo CF 1 for 3, 1 walk, 2 Ks; Starling Marte RF 0 for 4; Francisco Lindor SS 1 for 4; Pete Alonso 1B 0 for 4, 2 Ks; Jeff McNeil RF 0 for 4; Daniel Vogelbach DH 1 for 3, 1 K; Brett Baty 3B 1 for 3, double, 2 Ks; Luis Guillorme 2B 0 for 3, 2 Ks; Francisco Alvarez C 1 for 3, 2 Ks; Jose Butto (L,0-1) 4.2 innings, 2 runs - both earned, 4 hits, 1 HR, 6 walks, 1 K;

From the Post Game Notes

  • Mets were shutout for the fourth time this season...Was their first shutout loss against the Nationals since June 18, 2021 and their first at Citi Field since April 4, 2019...Have lost a season-high-tying three straight games (Also: April 3 - 5).
  • José Butto: Issued six walks, the most by a Mets pitcher since Taijuan Walker walked six batters on April 20, 2021 at Chicago-NL.
  • Brandon Nimmo (1-3, BB): Has reached base two or more times in 15 games this season, tied for the second-most in the majors.
NY Post: Mets fall flat in loss to Nationals in first game of homestand. "The Mets opened a seven-game homestand quietly, getting shut out by the Nationals for a third straight loss, 5-0, in front of 20,507 on Tuesday night. Jose Butto was wild, the top of the sixth inning was wacky and the Mets (14-10) failed to capitalize against the last-place Nationals (8-14). The Mets finished with just five hits — only one after the fifth inning — and were silenced by New Rochelle native Josiah Gray, who struck out nine in six scoreless innings."

NewsdayKeibert Ruiz (3-for-4, walk) touched Butto for a solo homer in the second inning to give Washington a 1-0 lead. Joey Meneses singled in a run in the third to make it 2-0. Otherwise, Butto (0-1, 2.79 ERA) did well, considering that after a 1-2-3 first he was in constant trouble. Butto allowed four hits, walked six and struck out one.

Brian Joura Mets360: "The Mets generally looked inept and struck out a season-high 13 times. The ABs could only be described as pitiful. They had just one legitimate scoring shot, which came in the fifth inning. Brandon Nimmo drew a two-out walk to load the bases [after Brett Baty's double and Franciso Alvarez' infield hit]. But Starling Marte struck out to end the threat."

NY Post: The disastrous inning that sunk any hopes of a Mets’ comeback. "But things quickly went downhill, turning into a three-run inning as the Nationals rolled to a 5-0 win at Citi Field...Victor Robles lined a single to right field and was pushed to third base by a grounder up the middle that Luis Guillorme could have fielded had he seen it...Following the missed play with two men on and one out, Luis Garcia checked his swing on what Showalter believed should have been a third strike.  Garcia took advantage, doubling to center, driving in two and extending the Mets’ deficit to four."

Year: 2022; Game#18; Monday  Apr 25, NYM 5 @ ;STL; 2; boxscore;  WP: May; LP: Gallegos;  Save: Díaz; Time: 3:00; NIGHT; Attendance: 35,455;  Record: 13-5; Standings: 1; Games up/behind: up 4.5; W;

Brandon Nimmo; 1 for 5, HR, 2 RBIs, 1 K; Pete Alonso; 2 for 4; Eduardo Escobar 2 for 4, 1 run scored; Jeff McNeil; 2 for 4, 2 doubles, 1 run scored; Dominic Smith; 1 for 1, 2 RBIs, 1 run scored; Max Scherzer; 7 innings, no runs, 2 hits, 1 walk, 10 Ks; Trevor May (W, 1-0) 1 inning, 2 runs - earned, 3 hits, 1 walk, 1 K; Edwin Díaz; (S,2) 1 inning, no runs, 1 walk, 2 Ks;

Faith and Fear in Flushing: A Banquet and Then a Food Fight. "Max Scherzer — he of the chewing-up-glass intensity, terminal hat head and relentless dugout pacing — simply annihilated the Cardinals’ tough lineup, trotting up his ungodly array of pitches and looking like he could do whatever he wanted with them. His counterpart, Miles Mikolas, might not have been as flashy but was every bit as good, befuddling a tough Mets lineup."

Mike Puma NY Post: Mets erupt for improbable five-run rally in ninth inning to beat Cardinals. Mark Canha’s grounder to third base in the ninth should have been the final out of a Cardinals shutout, but Gold Glover Nolan Arenado, perhaps confused by Eduardo Escobar running toward the base, took a few steps toward third and fired errantly to first. The Mets were alive and didn’t stop until they had scored five runs.

Mets.com: 'Fastest 90 of his life': Dom's sprint sparks Amazin' rally. "As Dominic Smith slid across the dirt, left hand extended, Jeff McNeil motored around third base with the potential go-ahead run. McNeil’s run was a luxury, if it was a run at all. What mattered -- in that moment, the only thing that mattered -- was for Smith to beat Giovanny Gallegos to the bag. Fully horizontal, Smith slapped the base with his hand. Gallegos, the opposing pitcher, touched it a fraction of a second later.

Brian Joura Mets360: "Everyone rightly points out all of the games the Mets have played against weak clubs. But they’re now 6-2 against the Giants, Phillies and Cardinals."

Year: 2021; Game#18; Sunday  Apr 25 NYM 4 Vs. WSN 0; boxscore;  WP: Walker;  LP: Corbin;  Time: 2:42; DAY; Attendance: 7,784;  Record: 10-8; Standings: 1; Games up/behind: up 1.5; W;

Pete Alonso 1B 1 for 2, HR, 1 RBI, 2 runs scored, 2 walks, 1 K; Francisco Lindor SS 1 for 4; J.D. Davis 3B 3 for 4, 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored; James McCann C 1 for 3, 1 RBI, 1 walk, 1 K; Jonathan Villar 2B 1 for 4, 2 Ks;  Taijuan Walker 7 innings, 3 hits, no runs, 3 walks, 4 Ks; Miguel Castro 1 inning, 2 hits, no runs, 3 Ks; Edwin Diaz 1 inning, no runs.

Mike Puma NY Post: Taijuan Walker’s best start of season leads Mets to win over Nationals. “In his most efficient start of the season, even without his best stuff, the right-hander — with superb defense behind him — fired seven shutout innings to lead a 4-0 victory over the Nationals at Citi Field.”

Deesha Thosar NY Daily News: Albert Almora, making his first start as a Met, made a game-altering play …Kyle Schwarber launched a deep fly ball to center that had the potential to damage Walker’s otherwise successful afternoon. Almora, not missing a beat, sprinted back toward the 408-foot sign in center, tracked the ball perfectly, leaped and made the catch before colliding into the wall for the final out of the inning.

Newsday: Walker was good, but he wouldn’t have been zero runs good if not for an outstanding catch by Almora...a stellar Conforto-to-Villar-Davis relay in the third. Lindor contributed a leaping grab of a fifth-inning line drive that wasn’t crucial to the outcome, but was sure darn pretty. Alonso made a diving stop of a hot shot on the final out of the game.

Brian Joura Mets 360: J.D. Davis gave the Mets the early lead with a two-run homer in the first inning. Davis singled and scored a run in the fourth...Pete Alonso, moved to second in the order for this game, homered to lead off the fifth inning…(subscription required).

David Lennon Newsday Give Luis Rojas credit for Sunday's lineup: Everything went the Mets' way. “Every Met was at the the right place at the right time Sunday. Across the board. Offensively, defensively… It was far too effective to dismiss as a lucky afternoon in the manager’s chair.”

The 29 year-old third baseman passes Darryl Strawberry's franchise mark with his sixth-inning blast off Mark Buehrle.

R.A. Dickey gives up 1 run on 3 hits, 1 walk and 7Ks for the win with the help from 4 different relief pitchers who close out the final 2 innings. Mike Baxter drove in two with an 8th inning pinch hit single.

NY Post: "Jose Reyes singled with one out in the Marlins’ eighth inning for his first hit against his former team in eight at-bats, eliciting yet another chorus of lusty boos from the crowd that once adored the ever-smiling shortstop."

Year: 2010; Game #19; Sunday;  Apr 25, NYM 1  Vs. ATL; 0; boxscore; 5 innings;  WP: Pelfrey;  LP: Hanson;  Save:   Time: 01:58; NIGHT; Attendance: 27,623; Record: 10-9; Standings: 2; Games up/behind: 1.5; W;

Baseball ReferenceMike Pelfrey throws a rain-shortened five-inning shutout as the Mets complete a series sweep of the Braves, 1 - 0, at Citi Field. Pelfrey is in trouble all five innings, but manages to escape unscathed in extending his string of scoreless innings to 24. It is actually Raul Valdes who is on the mound for New York when the game is stopped in the top of the 6th, but everything after the 5th is wiped out, giving Pelfrey credit for a complete game. The game's lone run comes when Jose Reyes runs wild in spite of the sloppy conditions, stealing second after a two-out bloop single in the 1st, and coming to score on Jason Bay's infield single when 3B Chipper Jones's throw skips away from 1B Troy Glaus just enough to allow Reyes to dash home.

NY Post: Mets Find Their Strokes: Johnson Pinch-Hit HR Beats Cards. "...riding a five-run fifth and an eighth-inning, pinch-hit home run by Mark Johnson to a 7-6 come-from-behind win last night over St. Louis....starter Steve Trachsel lasted just three-plus innings. But the Mets – who have won five of their last six series – still found a way to win.  With the game knotted at 6 in the eighth inning, Johnson reached out and lined reliever Dave Veres’ 2-0 fastball the other way, over the wall in left field....Closer Armando Benitez struck out the side in the ninth for his sixth save of the season in front of 24,637 soggy but happy fans at Shea."

The Reds brought in another righty, Scott Williamson, and he intentionally walked Robin Ventura – who had hit a solo shot in the third. Next, with the bases loaded Williamson pushed across the winning run by walking pinch-hitter Jon Nunnally. The Mets took the decisive 6-5 lead."
