Ramirez 2 for 4 with 3B, RBI in loss
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 10, 2022) – The Daytona Tortugas spoiled the St. Lucie Mets hopes of a sweep with a 9-2 win on Sunday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark (Box Score).
Calvin Ziegler, the highest signed draft pick by the Mets in 2021 (2nd round, 46th overall), made his organization debut. The 19-year-old pitched 3.2 innings, scattering two hits and two runs. He walked three and struck out three.
Alex Ramirez, the Mets No. 6 prospect, went 2 for 4 with a RBI triple and extended his hitting streak to three games.
The Tortugas took an early 2-0 lead on Ziegler in the first inning. Jay Allen drew a leadoff walk and was driven in by Yerlin Confidan's RBI double. Confidan would go on to score on sac fly later in the inning to make it 2-0.
Ziegler settled down and retired six out of seven after Confidan's double. He only needed a five pitches to throw a 1-2-3 second inning.
Tortugas starter Julian Aguiar got the win after throwing 5.0 perfect innings with seven strikeouts.
The Mets got their first base runner with two outs in the sixth inning when Jose Rivera drew a walk. Ramirez ended any hope of a Daytona no-hit bid when he followed with a single.
The Tortugas broke the game open with a seven-run bottom of the sixth. The Mets walked four batters in the frame, threw three wild pitches and had a passed ball.
Ramirez got the Mets on the board in the eighth inning with a run-scoring triple. Stanley Consuegra then knocked a single to bring home Ramirez for the final run of the night.
