Ashford Bases Clearing Triple in Ninth Rallies Ponies Past Fightins

READING, PA – Zach Ashford hit the go ahead bases clearing triple with two outs in the ninth to lead the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (15-27) to a come from behind 6-4 win over the Reading Fightin Phils at First Energy Stadium Friday night. The Ponies have taken three of the first four games in the series.

The Ponies were down 3-2 entering the ninth and were 0-22 coming into the game when trailing after eight innings this season. Luke Ritter led off with a walk, followed by Johneshwy Fargas reaching on a sacrifice bunt on a throwing error by pitcher Ofreidy Gomez (1-2). After a strikeout, Hayden Senger walked to load the bases. Two batters later, with the bases loaded and two out and the Ponies down to their final strike, Ashford belted a triple off the base of the centerfield wall that cleared the bases and put the Ponies on top 5-3. After Gomez was replaced by Mike Adams, Wyatt Young reached on an error allowing Ashford to score to make it 6-3.

Bryce Montes de Oca allowed a run in the ninth but struck out Jack Conley to end the game to earn his third save of the year.

The Rumble Ponies were down 3-1 in the top of the eighth when Francisco Alvarez crushed a solo home run over the left center field scoreboard to cut the deficit to 3-2. It's Alvarez third homer in his last two games and seventh of the season.

With Binghamton down 2-0 to Reading (18-25) in the seventh, Carlos Cortes hit a solo home run over the right centerfield wall, his first with the Ponies this year.

Mitch Ragan (1-1) earns the win pitching an inning and a third of scoreless relief. Ponies starter Jose Chacin allowed three runs over six and two thirds innings with one walk and three strikeouts in the no decision.

The Ponies continue their series with the Fightins on Saturday night with first pitch at 6:45 PM and pregame coverage getting underway at 6:30 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and 92.1 FM.

Postgame Notes: Ashford finished 2-4 with 3 RBI and has now driven in four runs over his last two games, all coming in the ninth inning.
