Ponies Walk Off 'Ducks, Snap Five Game Losing Streak
BINGHAMTON, NY – Zach Ashford's single knocked in Wyatt Young in the eleventh inning to propel the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (12-25) to a 5-4 win over the Akron RubberDucks (22-16) in walk off fashion Saturday night at Mirabito Stadium.
Jake Mangum moved the ghost runner up 90-feet on a sacrifice bunt, setting up Ashford for the winning hit off Akron reliever Andrew Misiaszek (2-1).
Ponies relievers Bryce Montes de Oca and Willy Taveras (1-2) each worked out of first and third jams in the two extra frames and Taveras picked up his first win of the season.
Akron scored first for the fifth consecutive game courtesy of a two RBI single from Jonathan Engelmann putting the 'Ducks up 2-0 in the second.
The RubberDucks then added two more in the third on an RBI triple from Will Brennan and sacrifice fly from José Tena putting Akron ahead 4-0.
Binghamton responded with four runs in the third on an RBI single off the bat of Ronny Mauricio scoring Jose Colina and RBI doubles from Luke Ritter and Jake Mangum. Young scored on Ritter's double then Mauricio scored on an error in the same sequence. Ritter then scored on Mangum's double.
Akron starter Logan T. Allen pitched six innings giving up nine hits and four runs while walking one and striking out nine, earning a no decision.
Ponies starter Jose Chacin pitched four and a third innings giving up nine hits and four runs with a walk and three strikeouts in a no decision.
Binghamton's bullpen pitched the last six and two thirds innings giving up just two hits while walking three and striking out nine.
The Ponies will conclude their series against Akron Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM. Pregame coverage will start at 12:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF & 92.1 FM.
POSTGAME NOTES: Mangum has six multi-hit games in the month of May after a 3-5 performance… Mauricio has an RBI in three-straight games.
