Year: 2021; Game#35; Sunday  May 16 NYM 1 @ TBR 7; boxscore;  WP: Fleming;  LP: Stroman; Time: 2:32; DAY; Attendance: 7,355;  Record: 19-16; Standings: 1; Games up/behind: up 1.0; L;

Patrick Mazeika hits his first MLB HR but that was one of only 2 Mets hits.  Marcus Stroman gave up 5 in 6 innings (L,3-4) for the loss.

Brian Joura Mets360: “The Mets managed just two hits and ended up losing to the Rays, 7-1. The Rays’ win gave them a sweep of the three-game series and they outscored the Mets, 22-8.”

Deesha Thosar NY Daily News: “Marcus Stroman gave up three home runs against the Rays to Manuel Margot, Willy Adames and Brandon Lowe. He took his fourth loss of the year as his season ERA jumped from 2.01 to 2.72 following his six-inning outing.”

Mets.com: “Patrick Mazeika became the first Met to homer for his first career hit since pitcher Jeremy Hefner on May 29, 2012, off the Phillies' Joe Blanton, and the first Mets position player to do it since Jordany Valdespin on May 7, 2012, off Philadelphia's Jonathan Papelbon.”

NY Post: “Michael Conforto and Jeff McNeil were Sunday’s casualties, both victims of hamstring injuries that removed them from action after just one at-bat each. If the makeshift lineup left to battle the Rays wasn’t problem enough, Marcus Stroman’s worst start of the season sealed it.”

Year: 2019; Game #42; Thursday;  May 16, NYM 6 @ WSN; 7; boxscore;   WP: Jennings;  LP: Wheeler;  Save: Doolittle; Time: 03:16; DAY; Attendance: 28,807; Record: 20-22; Standings: 3; Games up/behind: 3.5; L;

Nats get 4 in the 1st off Zack Wheeler (L,3-3). Mets tie it up with 4 in the 3rd on a Robinson Cano double and a Michael Conforto 3-run homer.  Washington goes back in from 6-4 in the 5th as Gerado Para slugs a 2-run homer off Zack.  Down 7-4 in the ninth, the Mets score 2 but Keon Broxton Ks with the bases loaded to end it.

NY Post: Mets’ worst day of year features two injuries, 1 crushing strikeout. "Two bodies down, an ugly Zack Wheeler start and series loss to the Nationals translated into maybe the worst day of this season for the Mets...Conforto received a concussion upon colliding with Robinson Cano chasing Howie Kendrick’s pop-up in the fifth. Conforto will be placed on the seven-day injured list for concussions and examined Friday....Broxton blamed his lack of playing time for his 1-for-25 (.040) nosedive since April 15."

Year: 2018; Game #39; Wednesday;  May 16, NYM 1  Vs. TOR; 12; boxscore; WP: Happ;  LP: Wheeler; Time: 03:34; DAY; Attendance: 28,400; Record: 20-19; Standings: 4; Games up/behind: 4.5; L;

NY Post: Zack Wheeler stinker dooms Mets on dreary day at Citi Field. "Wheeler was sharp for the first three innings, but was never the same following an 18-minute delay with the Mets batting in the third, as the grounds crew spread drying agent on the soaked field in a downpour...After returning to the mound in the fourth, Wheeler allowed a two-run homer to Teoscar Hernandez that put the Mets in a 3-0 hole. In the fifth, the Blue Jays scored three additional runs, ending Wheeler’s day at 81 pitches."

A David Wright 1st inning error helped the Nats score 3 off Jonathan Niese.  Washington added 2 more in the 3rd to score 5 in 4 innings off Niese (L,2-3).  Mets score 2 in the 5th on a Ruben Tejada groundout and an Eric Young Jr. double but were not able to overcome the 5-0 hole.

NY Post: Niese struggles, bats silent again as Mets fall to Nats. "Teddy Roosevelt — winner of the fourth-inning Presidents Race here — would certainly disapprove of the Mets carrying such little sticks. At least the Mets scored twice in the fifth on Friday, snapping a 22-inning scoreless streak. That would have to suffice as progress on a night when Jon Niese didn’t have his best stuff against the Nationals and the Mets’ defense was far from crisp. With almost nothing working, the Mets lost their third straight, 5-2 in front of 34,413 at Nationals Park."

Johan Santana started for the Mets going 6.2 innings,  allowing 2 runs and leaving with a 3-2 lead before the bullpen gave up 4 in the 8th.

NY Post: Late-Late Show. "The decision to wait three hours for last night’s rain to stop proved just fine for the Mets, who received seven brilliant innings from Jorge Sosa (W,3-0) in beating the Cubs 8-1 at Shea Stadium and moving one-half game ahead of the Braves in the NL East...The Cubs managed one hit against Sosa, a journeyman right-hander who continues to impress his new team...Easley...slugged his third homer in six days, a two-run shot in the fourth that gave the Mets a 4-0 lead. Easley entered last night batting .400 on the homestand and has perhaps found a home at the No. 2 spot in the lineup."

NY Post: Piazza ruins Rocket's Day - Dramatic HR in 9th Denies Rog 8th win. "Trailing 2-0 with Eric Valent on second and two outs, Piazza stepped to the plate. Astros manager Jimy Williams walked to the mound, wanting his closer to walk Piazza and pitch to Todd Zeile. 'Jimy didn’t want me to face him,' Octavio Dotel said. 'I feel I can get anyone out in this game. If I walk him, what if Zeile got me?'...Dotel got ahead of Piazza, 1-2. The Mets were down to their final strike, and the Houston fans were roaring. After all, Clemens was about to be 8-0...That’s when Dotel challenged Piazza with a fastball. And that’s when Piazza crushed an enormous 408-foot, game-tying two-run blast into the Astro bullpen...Four innings later, the Mets would somehow pull out a stunning win when Jason Phillips – who was hitting .172 before yesterday, drove a game-winning homer off Brandon Backe."

NY Post: Streaking Mets have the Leit Stuff; Lefty hurls, hits club past Pods.  "Al Leiter didn’t need to throw a two-hit shutout to win last night. But he did need to help his own cause...the staff ace needed to belt the go-ahead RBI single with two outs in the fourth, and his clutch hit stood up as the Mets held off the Padres, 3-1....Leiter (5-2) threw six innings of seven-hit ball and David Weathers and Mark Guthrie finished up."
