Brian Joura Mets360: "The Mets got some hits and scored some runs but it was another pitiful outing, as they fell to the Phillies, 10-5, Wednesday night in Philadelphia. They’ve now lost five of their last six games and are now 4-9 in the month of May."

NY Post: Mets crumble in sloppy loss to Phillies as struggles continue. "Joey Lucchesi, thrust into the rotation for his first start this season, lost the strike zone in a fifth inning that largely decided the game, but the left-hander wasn’t alone in sinking the Mets in their 10-5 loss to the Phillies. The Mets, who lost their third straight — and for the fifth time in six games — committed two errors and weren’t sharp on multiple other plays defensively."

Tim Healey Newsday: Mets drop third straight to Phillies, losing blowout in Joey Lucchesi's season debut. "Although he did well early, Lucchesi unraveled in a hurry in the bottom of the fifth, when six consecutive batters reached base to open the inning. Three of those came via walks, when the Phillies — in Mendoza’s view — managed to take pitches just outside the strike zone after swinging at such offerings early in the game. When Lucchesi answered by throwing more strikes, the Phillies hit him."

NY Daily News: Joey Lucchesi, Mets unravel in 5th inning as they lose 3rd straight to Phillies. "It was the third straight loss to their NL East foes for the Mets, who have now lost five of their last six games."

1983

In an 11-4 rout of the Pirates, rookie right fielder Darryl Strawberry hit his first major league home run, a two-run round-tripper off Pittsburgh's Lee Tunnell at Three Rivers Stadium. The troubled Mets outfielder, the eventual franchise leader with 252 homers, will hit a total of 335 during his turbulent 17-year career with the Mets, Dodgers, Giants, and Yankees.

1988

Mets catcher Gary Carter hits his 299th career home run, connecting for a three-run round-tripper off Greg Booker in the seventh inning of the team’s 7-4 victory over the Padres at Jack Murphy Stadium. The future Hall of Fame backstop will go 230 at-bats and three months before hitting #300 on August 11th.

2008

Before starting the Subway Series at Yankee Stadium, the visiting Mets conduct a closed-door clubhouse meeting to clear the air concerning comments made yesterday by closer Billy Wagner about his teammates' availability after games. Although the reliever addresses the issue, his remarks focus on the team's lackluster start to the season and the need to get it done on the field.
