Ponies Fall at Home to Sea Dogs on the 4th of July
BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (3-4, 31-45) fell to the Portland Sea Dogs 11-3 on Independence Day at the Ballpark in front of 4,984 people. Portland hit three home runs, which accounted for eight of their runs scored.
Hudson Potts hit a three-run shot to left to left off Ponies starter Jose Chacin (0-5) to open the scoring in the first. Two batters later, David Hamilton tallied his sixth homer of the season to increase the Portland lead to 4-0.
The Ponies were able to get one run back on a Carlos Cortes sacrifice fly plating Brandon McIlwain in the bottom of the frame to make it 4-1. It was Cortes's 24th RBI of the season.
The Sea Dogs (5-2, 35-41) then sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh accounting for six runs and seven hits highlighted by a grand slam by Tyreque Reed. McIlwain's sacrifice fly scoring Zach Ashford made it 11-2 in the bottom of the inning.
Portland starter Brian Van Belle (3-1) picked up the win pitching six innings scattering five hits and a run while walking none and striking out six.
The Rumble Ponies will continue their series against Portland on Wednesday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM with pregame coverage beginning at 6:20 PM on NewsRadio 1290 WNBF and 92.1 FM.
POSTGAME NOTES: Matt Winaker went 2-3 in the game with an RBI in the ninth… Brett Baty went 2-4 and now has three multi-hit games over his last five games played.
