Good Morning. Happy Birthday Travis Taijeron and Ali Sanchez. New Mets Hall of Famers talk to the Press, Tommy Pham passes his physical, Prospects 1500 has a Mets Top 50 prospect list, and Jon Heyman says the Mets don't want to trade Baty and Alvarez.

The Mets yesterday officially announced the two year deal with Tomas Nido.
Jon Heyman NY Post: Big-spending Mets reluctant to move their top prospects. "The Mets may be big spenders, but they remain committed to the idea of building from within long term. While Francisco Alvarez, and especially Brett Baty, don’t seem to have a very good chance to crack the Mets’ packed roster, the team is reluctant to trade them...The Marlins tried a couple times to acquire Baty, both before and after the Mets’ Carlos Correa deal fell through. The Marlins were prepared to offer one of their young starters (Edward Cabrera or Jesus Luzardo). "
Jon Heyman NY Post: These smaller MLB free agency contracts could be big deals. Jon's #5 was "Jose Quintana, LHP, Mets ($24M, two years). The Mets came out of nowhere here, grabbing the veteran who resurrected his career last year."
Jon Heyman NY Post: Mets, Red Sox among MLB teams eyeing January deals. "the Mets are looking for a lefty reliever and there’s interest in Zack Britton. So far the Mets aren’t sure if they can work out a deal for Britton, who threw for teams last week...Andrew Chafin, whose market is heating up, is another Mets possibility."
Danny Abriano SNY.TV: Way too early Mets 26-man roster prediction for 2023 MLB season. Danny has Francisco Alvarez making the team as a catcher/DH so the Mets can take advantage of his bat while easing him into the catching role. He also has David Peterson in the bullpen and Bryce Montes De Oca making the team.
Prospects 1500 published their Top 50 Mets Prospect list. A very extensive list that shows how the Mets farm system is in a lot better place than years past. Here is their top 9: 1. Francisco Alvarez; 2. Brett Baty; 3. Ronny Mauricio; 4. Kevin Parada; 5. Alex Ramirez; 6. Jett Williams; 7. Blade Tidewell; 8. Dominic Hamel; 9. Mark Vientos;
Laura Albanese Newsday: Mets Hall of Fame inductees bleed orange and blue. "Howie Rose and Gary Cohen grew up rooting for the Mets, making those pilgrimages to Shea Stadium at the very beginning of the team’s history. Al Leiter, from New Jersey, repped the orange and blue as a kid, too. Jay Horwitz dedicated his life to the team, and one of Howard Johnson’s regrets is that he didn’t end his career playing with the franchise that made him a household name."

The Mets are in the process of assembling their roster of guest instructors for spring training, and one of their goals is to have David Wright come to work with Brett Baty and Mark Vientos.

Keith Hernandez’s contract talks with SNY have been on hold - they were initially scheduled to resume last week. But talks are expected again soon. The two sides were a distance apart on contract terms following an initial offer to Hernandez before the holidays.

"My one concern with this team - it's an older team. They've only gotten older"

1984 |
1984: The Chicago White Sox claim 39-year-old pitcher Tom Seaver from the New York Mets as compensation for the loss of free agent pitcher Dennis Lamp to the Toronto Blue Jays. The Mets left Seaver off their protected list assuming (wrongly) that no team would want to select the aging star, who finished 1983 with a 9-14 record and a 3.55 ERA. But Seaver will improve to 15-11 with the White Sox this season.
Faith and Fear in Flushing: "Saving Ron Gardenhire (Instead of Tom Seaver)". Greg Prince looks at all the players the Mets protected in 1984 not named Tom Seaver.
Two Years ago, after GM Jared Porter was fired, the Mets lost out on George Springer:
Metstradamus: The One That Escaped To The North. “But if you had told me after Steve Cohen and all his money took over the Mets that they would go 0-for-3 in the room with JT Realmuto, Trevor Bauer, and George Springer, I would have told you that you were out of your mind.”
Mike’s Mets: Thoughts on George Springer and Jared Porter.
Joel Sherman NY Post: “The Mets let Springer’s camp know over last weekend that they were willing to go to six years at $120 million, but no further. At that point, the Mets were pretty much out of contention, as Springer headed toward the six-year, $150 million pact he reached Wednesday with the Blue Jays.”
