BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (21-22) defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-4 on Saturday night at Mirabito Stadium, led by strong pitching and two home runs from Agustin Ruiz. The Ponies have taken four of the first five games and three-straight to claim the series victory.

Binghamton took an early 4-0 lead with four runs in the second inning. Brandon McIlwain led off the inning with a single, followed by a Luke Ritter two-run homer. The next batter, Hayden Senger, walked and Ruiz followed with a two-run blast to right field.

McIlwain extended his hitting streak to 11 games with two hits and Ritter homered for the second-straight game.

Binghamton added two more runs on an RBI double from Tanner Murphy and RBI single from Rowdey Jordan in the fourth to make it 6-0.

Richmond (21-22) had nothing going against Dom Hamel (2-2) through the first four innings, but put up a four-spot in the fifth inning, highlighted by runs batted in from Marco Luciano, Andy Thomas, Carter Aldrete, and Riley Mahan. Hamel tossed five innings and tied a season high with eight strikeouts, earning his second victory of the season.

With the Ponies up 6-4 in the eighth, Nolan Clenney stranded the bases loaded to complete a scoreless inning in relief. In the home half of the frame, Ruiz belted his second homer of the game to make it 7-4. New York Mets reliever Jimmy Yacabonis faced the minimum with a nine-pitch ninth inning to earn the save.

The Rumble Ponies will finish their series with the Flying Squirrels on Sunday night. First pitch is set for 6:35 PM with postgame fireworks to follow, presented by the Miller Auto Team, on the WNBF Rumble Ponies Radio Network.

Postgame Notes: Dylan Hall, Clenney, and Yacabonis combined to throw four scoreless frames with seven strikeouts out of the bullpen…It was the second two-homer game of Ruiz’s career, with the other coming for High-A Fort Wayne on May 18, 2021…This marks Binghamton’s first series win over Richmond since it won a three-game series over the Squirrels in 2016.
