New York Mets purchased Jimmy Piersall from the Washington Senators on May 23, 1963.

New York Mets claimed Aaron Altherr on waivers from the San Francisco Giants on May 23, 2019.

1963

Mets first baseman Gil Hodges is immediately named as the manager of the Senators, replacing Mickey Vernon, when the teams complete the deal that sends Jimmy Piersall and a player to be named later to New York. The 33 year-old part-time outfielder, who will bat only .194 in 40 games for his new team, will be released in July after drawing the ire of manager Casey Stengel for running the bases backward to celebrate his 100th career home run.

1965

Mets' outfielder Ron Swoboda takes his position wearing a batting helmet - on his foot. After kicking the protective headgear, which gets stuck on his spikes, manager Casey Stengel ordered the young player to go out to the field.

2004

Kaz Matsui, who surpasses Tommy Agee's 1969 team record, sets a franchise mark with his fifth leadoff home run of the season, becoming the first Mets player to accomplish the feat in consecutive games. The 28 year-old Japanese shortstop is also the first big leaguer to have his first five career round-trippers be hit batting first in the first inning of a game.

2011

In a profile piece written for The New Yorker magazine, Fred Wilpon makes some very candid comments about some of the 'stars' on his payroll. The embattled Mets owner is critical of the often injured Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran, and calls David Wright a nice kid, but "not a superstar".

Baseball Reference:

1999 The Mets rally for 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to defeat the Phillies and Curt Schilling‚ 5 - 4.

2004The Mets down the Rockies‚ 4 - 0‚ as Tom Glavine hurls a one-hitter. Glavine loses his no-hitter with two outs in the 8th inning as Kit Pellow doubles. Kaz Matsui leads off the game with a homer for New York‚ the 5th time he has done so this year to tie Chili Davis for the most leadoff homers for a National League rookie. He hit one yesterday as well.

2006: Carlos Beltran hits a two-run home run in the bottom of the 16th inning that gives the Mets a 9 - 8 victory over Philadelphia. The game lasts 5 hours, 22 minutes, has 522 pitches and is the longest for the Mets since 1995You Tube Link

2010The Mets win their first subway series against the crosstown Yankees since 1998 with a 6 - 4 victory. Jason Bay homers twice - only his second and third long balls of the year - against CC SabathiaJohan Santana is the winner and Francisco Rodriguez picks up the save by striking out Alex Rodriguez with two men on to end the game.

2019: Gomez's 3-run HR in 8th lifts Mets past Nats - 5/23/19. You Tube Link.
