PORTLAND, ME – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (3-7, 38-41) fell to the Portland Sea Dogs 4-2 on Saturday night at Hadlock Field, despite outhitting Portland 10-5.
The Ponies grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Wyatt Young and Rowdey Jordan began the game with back-to-back singles. Later in the first, Agustin Ruiz drove in Young with a sacrifice fly.
Binghamton added another run in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. Jaylen Palmer hit a leadoff single in the frame and Jordan later drove him in with a sacrifice fly.
Portland (9-2, 44-36) took advantage of Binghamton's defensive errors in the fifth inning. The Ponies committed two of their four errors of the night in the fifth inning.
The Sea Dogs scored three runs in the fifth, highlighted by an RBI groundout from Phillip Sikes and an RBI double from Chase Meidroth.
With Portland leading 3-2, Alex Binelas crushed a leadoff solo homer in the sixth to extend the lead to 4-2.
Binghamton had the tying run on second base in the ninth inning but ended the game on a 4-6 lineout double play.
Rumble Ponies starter Luis Moreno struck out eight batters over five innings of work, while allowing three runs and only one earned run. Moreno struck out at least seven hitters for his fifth-straight start.
The Rumble Ponies will finish their series with the Sea Dogs on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM and pregame coverage gets underway at 12:45 PM on the WNBF Rumble Ponies Radio Network. It will be their final game before the All Star Break.
Postgame Notes: Matt O'Neill went 3-for-3 and reached base four times…It was O'Neill's first three-hit game of the season…Young and Brandon McIlwain also had multi-hit games…Jordan extended his hitting streak to five games.
