PRESS RELEASE, STATS - METS ACQUIRE OUTFIELDER JOSE SIRI FROM TAMPA BAY "The New York Mets today announced they have acquired outfielder Jose Siri from Tampa Bay in exchange for RHP Eric OrzeSiri, 29, had 16 doubles, 18 homers, 47 RBI and 14 stolen bases in 130 games with the Rays last season. He had a 1.8 WAR according to Baseball Reference. The 6-2, 210-pounder was tied for second among all outfielders in runs prevented and outs above average according to MLB Statcast. Additionally, he also ranked ninth in the majors in sprint speed last season according to MLB Statcast."

Tim Healey Newsday: Mets add Jose Siri from Rays to replace Harrison Bader in centerfield. "The Mets acquired outfielder Jose Siri in a trade with the Rays on Tuesday, the team announced, solidifying their centerfield outlook for 2025 and perhaps beyond with a ready-made replacement for Harrison Bader...He has been a below-average hitter in three full seasons in the majors. In 2024, he batted .187 with a .620 OPS, totaled 18 home runs and 14 steals and struck out 170 times in 130 games."



New York Mets sign free agent RHP Alex Carrillo to a minor league contract "The New York Mets have announced on the Transactions tab of their Roster page that they have signed RHP Alex Carrillo to a Minor League contract and assigned to the Syracuse Mets...Last year for Washington in the Frontier league he went 3-1, 3.31 ERA, 35 games, 35.1 innings, 49 Ks.  This Winter he is pitching for the Tigres de Aragua 4-0, 2.08 ERA, 14 games, 13 innings, 17 Ks."  

Mike Puma NY Post: Luis Severino eyeing multiyear contract after rejecting Mets’ qualifying offer. "...it’s likely Severino — who is viewed within the industry as a No. 2 or 3 starter for a playoff-caliber team — will receive at least four years with his next contract..."

Tom Seaver is named the National League's Rookie of the Year. The 22 year-old right-hander, who compiled a 16-13 record along with a 2.76 ERA for the last-place Mets, easily outdistances fellow righties Dick Hughes of St. Louis and Cincinnati's Gary Nolan for the freshman honor.

1969

The BBWAA selects Willie McCovey (.320, 45, 126) as the National League's Most Valuable Player. The Giants first baseman edges Tom Seaver, who posted a 2.21 ERA with 208 strikeouts and a league-leading 25 wins for the World Champion Mets.

1984: Four days after his 20th birthday, New York Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden becomes the youngest player ever to win the National League Rookie of the Year Award. Gooden posted a 17-9 record with a 2.60 ERA and a major league-leading 276 strikeouts. Bryce Harper will be even younger when he wins the award in 2012.
