Billy Eppler on why the Mets made the decision to trade David Robertson:
— SNY (@SNYtv) July 28, 2023
"We were faced with where our club was at this point of the season. In this circumstance the value of the players we acquired exceeded our expectations, so we executed it" pic.twitter.com/7INLhHYQaq

Despite a win tonight, the Mets' sell-off has begun. Buck Showalter declined comment on the Mets' deal of David Robertson to the Marlins, but noted: "Robby's been a rock."

They’re here!

Welcome Marco Vargas and Ronald Hernandez to the Mets 💪 pic.twitter.com/SGwSLWFdGv
If you subscribe to BP you knew about Marco Vargas (at least) two weeks ago, when @jeffpaternostro said he wanted to find space for him on the Midseason 50:https://t.co/HAbNyhxqli pic.twitter.com/l4Tq3xqBiB
— Xraig (@cdgoldstein) July 28, 2023
But I think you should just always try to get the best return and honestly don’t know if a better one was out there here, he’d be the best prospect left in Anaheim and you aren’t getting Carter or maybe even Acuña from the Rangers for him.
— Jeffrey Paternostro (@jeffpaternostro) July 28, 2023
Marco Vargas currently sits No.11 in our Marlins Top 30

Ronald Hernandez is No.24
Vargas, who turned 18 two months ago, has risen this season after hitting .283/.457/.432 in CPX with nearly double walks than strikeouts.
Here were the preseason reports on each👇 https://t.co/SAOVUs6oeC pic.twitter.com/VIdcUojzxR
Vargas is ranked as the #Marlins’ No. 14 prospect at midseason by Baseball America. #LGM https://t.co/YVGoqdcGaK
— Justin Rocke (@JustinRocke) July 28, 2023
A scout familiar with the 2 Marlins prospects: “Both have high-ceiling potential, tools and makeup, but at their level you’re talking about a ton of projection. I can see why the scout in Billy (Eppler) would make the trade. But as a GM in New York it’s going to be a tough sell.”
— John Harper (@NYNJHarper) July 28, 2023
Marco Vargas is a helium prospect who has plus bat-to-ball skills and could end up a future every day 2B. One scout was surprised he got moved for rental
— Joe DeMayo (@PSLToFlushing) July 28, 2023
Ronald Hernandez is advanced behind the plate and a feel to hit
I expected more for Robertson myself. But what do I know?
Marco Vargas is the No. 18 prospect in the Marlins’ system
— Danny Abriano (@DannyAbriano) July 28, 2023
Ronald Hernandez is their No. 21 prospect
That is incredibly underwhelming, to the point of shocking
David Robertson was the best reliever on the market. Have to do better than that https://t.co/YX9BFQa24C
every mainstream writer is referencing 6-8 month old prospect rankings to kill the return while every prospect writer who wrote them is going “holy shit they gave up Marco Vargas for a rental reliever????”
— Jarrett Seidler (@jaseidler) July 28, 2023
This is a huge return for the Mets.
— Fish on the Farm (@marlinsminors) July 28, 2023
Marco Vargas is one of the furthest advanced 18 year olds I’ve seen. Ronald Hernandez is ready for A/A+ right now.
Wish those kids the best of luck in New York.#Marlins https://t.co/NrR2VuSMna
Mets get two really intriguing lower level prospects for Robertson.
— Aram Leighton (@AramLeighton8) July 28, 2023
Marco Vargas is an extremely advanced 18-year-old, sweet swing from the left side and a fantastic approach. Hit tool could be plus. 144 wRC+ in FCL. Top 10 prospect in a bad system for me.
Here's a look at newly acquired Met, INF Marco Vargas. He's just 18 years old. @marlinsminors said "He is one of the furthest advanced 18 year olds I've seen." #LGM pic.twitter.com/rQ9iA3ddcx

Here's a look at newly acquired Met, switch-hitting catcher Ronald Hernandez (19 years old). @marlinsminors noted that he is ready for A/A+ immediately in the #Mets system. #LGM pic.twitter.com/AKz0TNzWKS

With David Robertson off to Miami, this is a signal of more trades to come over the next few days
— Joe DeMayo (@PSLToFlushing) July 28, 2023
Have to imagine Tommy Pham and/or Mark Canha are next on the list
