St. Lucie tosses one-hitter in game 1 victory

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (August 18, 2023) – The St. Lucie Mets and Jupiter Hammerheads split a doubleheader on Friday evening at Clover Park. The Mets won game 1, 2-1 (Box Score). The Hammerheads won the second game 7-4 (Box Score).

In game 1, Mets starter Saul Garcia pitched an absolute gem. Garcia pitched a career-high 6.0 innings of scoreless ball. The only hit the Hammerheads mustered against him was a surprise bunt single by Jordan McCants on the first pitch of the game.

Garcia walked three batters, plunked two and struck out nine. He limited the Hammerheads to 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position. He stranded runners in scoring position in each of his first four innings. Garcia retired the final eight batters he faced, including five via strikeout.

The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Wilfredo Lara and Nick Lorusso hit back-to-back doubles off Jupiter starter Brandon White.

Vincent Perozo slugged his seventh homer of the season, a solo shot, in the fourth inning to put the Mets up 2-0.

Mets reliever Jean Calderon pitched a dicey seventh inning but recorded his second save of the season. Calderon hit the leadoff batter, walked a batter, committed an error on an errant pickoff throw and threw a wild pitch that brought home Carlos Santiago to cut the lead to 2-1. The wild pitch also sent the tying run to third base. Calderon recovered to strike out Ian Lewis to end the game.

Jefrey De Los Santos went 1 for 3 to extend his hitting streak to six games.

Kevin Villavicencio went 0 for 2 from the nine spot to snap a 10-game hitting streak.

The Hammerheads did not record another hit after McCants started the game with the bunt single.

In game 2, the Hammerheads jumped on Mets starter Jose Gomez for five runs in the third inning in Gomez's team debut en route to the 7-4 victory.

Brett Roberts and Jake DeLeo hit run-scoring singles and Lewis capped the inning with a two-run homer for a 5-0 lead.

The Mets got on the board in the fifth inning when Yohairo Cuevas launched his first home run with St. Lucie to make it a 6-1 game.

The home run by Cuevas was the only run allowed by Jupiter starter Cole Kirschsieper through the first five innings. Nick Lorusso started the sixth with a triple and Jose Hernandez drew a walk to end Kirschsieper's night at 101 pitches.

Karell Paz laced a two-run triple against new pitcher Euri Montero to make it 7-3. Villavicencio followed with a run-scoring ground out that cut the deficit to 7-4. Montero settled down to get out of the inning with no more trouble.

Evan Taylor pitched a scoreless seventh to record his league-leading 17th save.

Kirschsieper ended up getting the win. He gave up three runs on four hits over 5.0 innings. He walked two and struck out nine.

Gomez suffered the loss. He was charged with five runs on six hits over 3.0 innings.

Paz and Cuevas each went 2 for 3 in the defeat.

The Mets (38-73, 14-32) and Hammerheads (58-54, 23-23) play the fifth game of their series at Clover Park on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 p.m. It's the annual Boo Bash at the park. Fans are encouraged to dress up in Halloween costumes. There will also be postgame fireworks.
