Game Recap and Highlights: Gilbert, Acuña Lead Binghamton to Victory Over Portland

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (21-21, 56-55), led by Drew Gilbert and Luisangel Acuña, defeated the Portland Sea Dogs 7-4 on Friday night at Mirabito Stadium. The Ponies evened up the series 2-2, and jumped back in front of Portland for second place in the Northeast Division in the Eastern League.

With the Ponies leading 3-0 in the second inning, Gilbert hit a two-run single to extend the lead to 5-0. Gilbert reached base four times and had a three-hit night with four runs batted in. The 22-year-old hit a monstrous solo home run in the fourth to give Binghamton a 6-2 lead and added an RBI single in the sixth to extend the lead to 7-2.

Acuña had his first three-hit game with Binghamton and ripped an RBI double in the second inning. He scored two runs and recorded his 50th stolen base this year, across Double-A Frisco (42) and Double-A Binghamton (8).

The Ponies got on the board with two runs in the first inning when Jeremiah Jackson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Agustin Ruiz hit a sacrifice fly. Acuña’s RBI double and Gilbert’s two-run single made it 5-0 after two innings.

Daniel Juarez made his first Double-A start and tossed three hitless and scoreless frames. Portland (21-22, 61-51) scored two runs in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Blaze Jordan and sacrifice fly from Tyler Dearden against Joey Lancellotti.

Down 7-2 in the seventh, Portland scored another pair of runs on Tyler Esplin’s two-run double that scored Tyler McDonough and Elih Marrero against Paul Gervase.

Nolan Clenney slammed the door on the victory with two scoreless innings with three strikeouts and he earned his second save.

The Rumble Ponies continue their series with the Sea Dogs at Mirabito Stadium on Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:07 p.m. and pregame coverage will begin at 5:50 p.m. on the WNBF Rumble Ponies Radio Network.

Postgame Notes: Gilbert extended his hitting streak to six games…Gilbert drove in four runs in a game for the second time in his career and first time in Double-A…Acuña had his first multi-hit game with Binghamton…Jackson reached base twice with a single and hit by pitch and has now reached base in 13 of his first 14 games with the Ponies… Gervase (1-0) earned the win in his Double-A debut.
