The Brooklyn Cyclones (36-27, 64-64) continue their chase for a second-half North Division title against Wilmington Blue Rocks (25-38, 54-73) — the High-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals — on Friday starting at 7:00 p.m. from Maimonides Park on Coney Island in Brooklyn, N.Y.


RHP Layonel Ovalles (0-1, 1.59 ERA) — the Mets’ No. 28 prospect per Baseball America — is scheduled to take the hill for Brooklyn. Wilmington’s projected to counter RHP Brad Lord (1-5, 3.89 ERA).

LAST TIME OUT: The Cyclones dropped Thursday's contest to Wilmington, 6-4...Brooklyn held a 3-1 lead entering the 9th...Blue Rocks scored 5 runs in the top of the 9th to take the lead for good on a 3-run C Caleb Farmer double and a 2-run CF Andrew Pinckney triple...Brooklyn scored in the bottom half on a DH José Mena sacrifice fly, but stranded the tying runs on base...1B William Lugo collected 2 hits and an RBI for the Cyclones...Pinckney and DH Will Frizzell each accrued multiple knocks for Wilmington...Brooklyn's RHP Jawilme Ramírez took a no-decision after allowing just 1 run on 3 hits over 6.0 innings.

 

THE GUI-EST OF HONOR: INF Luis Guillorme joins the Cyclones on Friday to start a Major League rehab assignment...The 28-year-old has been on the Mets' 10-day injured list since July 22 with a right calf strain...Guillorme has appeared in 50 games at the Major League level this year, posting a .238/.304/.347 slash line with a .651 OPS, adding a home run and 9 RBI...The left-handed swinger started the year on the Mets' Opening Day roster before being optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on May 17...He was recalled back to New York on June 9...In 331 MLB games with the Mets since 2018, Guillorme is a .263 (188-715) lifetime hitter with a .683 OPS in addition to 5 home runs and 48 RBI...The Venezuelan-born infielder appeared in 125 South Atlantic League games with Single-A Savannah in 2014 and 2015, composing a slash line of .319/.391/.354 with a .745 OPS.

 

ON THE FINAL FEW CORKSCREWS: Brooklyn is looking to secure a second-straight playoff appearance...The Cyclones are 36-27 in the second half and tied with Jersey Shore (36-27) atop the North Division of the SAL with 3 games left to play...The BlueClaws hold the tiebreaker over Brooklyn because of winning the season series (15-11).

JETT THE MET: INF Jett Williams has been stellar since he made his Cyclones debut on August  1 and all summer long…Since returning from the All-Star break on July 14, the 19-year-old is slashing .308/.466/.585 with a 1.051 OPS, 35 runs scored, 12 doubles, 4 triples, 8 home runs, 21 RBI, 45 walks, and 16 stolen bases in 46 games between Brooklyn and Single-A St. Lucie…Since that date, no player in Minor League Baseball (min. 205 PA) has a higher on-base percentage (.466) ...On the season, Williams is tied for 4th in Minor League Baseball in walks (99)…With one more walk, the Texas native will be the first teenager in MiLB to reach the century mark in free passes since the stat portal started in 2005...Since making his SAL debut, the Rockwall, Texas, native has led the circuit (min. 120 PA) in on-base percentage (.446), OPS (.998), and walks (30)...He is also tied for 1st in extra-base hits (16), 3rd in slugging percentage (.552), tied for 3rd in stolen bases (10), 7th in batting average (.293), and tied for 4th in doubles (8) and 5th in hits (34)...Among SAL players with at least 140 plate appearances in 2023, Williams is 2nd in the circuit in walk rate (20.3%) and OBP (.446) and 3rd in wRC+ (172), wOBA (.448), and OPS (.998).

 

TOP OF THE LADDER: With his leadoff double in the bottom of the 6th on Thursday vs. Wilmington, OF Alex Ramírez broke a tie with INF José Peroza (162) for the Cyclones' all-time hit record with 163...The 20-year-old is scattered among the Cyclones’ all-time leaderboard despite joining the team last July 4...Entering Friday, the Dominican native also surpassed Peroza for 1st in doubles (37), is 2nd in walks (70), tied for 2nd in runs scored (86), 3rd in RBI (87) behind OF Stanley Consuegra (88) and Peroza (91), and 3rd in total bases (241).
