Game Recap and Highlights: Syracuse Mets comeback runs out of steam in 11-6 loss on Friday night

Syracuse, NY – After trailing, 5-0, 6-1, and 7-5, Syracuse pulled within one run twice before ultimately falling, 11-6, to the Rochester Red Wings on Friday night in front of an electric crowd of nearly 5,000 fans at NBT Bank Stadium. Despite the loss, Danny Mendick went 4-for-4 at the plate for Syracuse with two RBIs.

 

Rochester (61-71, 27-32) jumped on top in the top of the second inning. With one out, Onix Vega walked, Brady Lindsly singled, and Richie Martin walked to load the bases. A Cody Wilson pop out to first base had Syracuse dreaming of getting out of the inning unscathed. Unfortunately for the Mets, that didn’t happen. Jordy Barley worked a bases-loaded walk to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead. Then, Darren Baker singled home two runs, extending the Rochester advantage to three, 3-0, but Baker was thrown out at second base on the play to end the inning. 

 

The Red Wings added to their edge in the third. Jack Dunn singled, stole second, moved to third on a fly out, and scored on a wild pitch to make it a 4-0 game. Then, Erick Mejia and Vega singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Lindsly hit a sacrifice fly out to right field, scoring Mejia, giving Rochester a 5-0 advantage. 

 

Syracuse (54-78, 21-37) began its comeback in the top of the third. Jaylen Palmer led off with a single, stole second base, moved to third on a Wyatt Young groundout, and scored on a Danny Mendick single to make it a 5-1 ballgame. 

 

Rochester regained its five-run lead in the top of the fifth. Baker led off with a single, stole second base, moved to third on a sac bunt, and scored on a groundout from Francisco Tostado, giving the Red Wings a 6-1 advantage. 

 

The Mets struck back in a big way in the bottom of the fifth. Palmer walked, and after Young struck out, Mendick singled, and Palka reached on an error to load the bases. Abraham Almonte followed with a single to score Palmer and make it a 6-2 game. After Carlos Cortes popped out, Brandon McIlwain doubled, scoring Mendick and Palka, pulling the Mets within two, 6-4. 

 

Syracuse came even closer in the sixth. With two outs, Young singled. Then Mendick lined a pitch into left field for a single. Young was running towards second on the pitch and stopped at third when Mendick was in a rundown between first and second base. Young took the opportunity to race home and score before the throw, trimming the Syracuse deficit to one, 6-5. 

 

The Red Wings got an insurance run in the top of the eighth. With two outs and runners at first and second, Lindsly collected an RBI single to push Rochester back up two, 7-5. Lindsly was one of four Red Wings players with multiple RBIs in the game. 

 

The Mets again responded in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Lorenzo Cedrola walked. After Palmer flied out, Young singled to put runners at first and second. Mendick then had another clutch hit with a double down the left-field line, scoring Cedrola to once again bring Syracuse within one, 7-6. Unfortunately for the Mets, Daniel Palka grounded out to end the inning. 

 

Rochester proceeded to put the game away in the ninth. Two singles, a walk, and a sacrifice fly out pushed the Red Wings advantage to 8-6. Then Mejia put the exclamation point on the night for Rochester with a three-run home run, giving Rochester an 11-6 lead. 

 

The Mets and Red Wings continue their five-game series with the penultimate game on Saturday night. Right-hander Peyton Battenfield is scheduled to make his Mets organizational debut with Syracuse opposite Rochester right-hander Roddery Muñoz. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m.
