Here are the Brooklyn Cyclone Game Notes for today's game.


The Brooklyn Cyclones (0-0) open the 2024 South Atlantic League against the Wilmington Blue Rocks (0-0) — the High-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals — on Friday evening at 6:35 p.m. from Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, Del.

RHP Noah Hall  — the Mets’ seventh-round pick in 2023 out of South Carolina — is scheduled to take the hill in his professional debut for Brooklyn. Wilmington’s projected to counter RHP Andry Lara.

OPENING DAY: The Cyclones open up the 2024 campaign on the road against the same squad they finished the 2023 season against, the Wilmington Blue Rocks...Brooklyn is 15-7 all-time on Opening Day, including an 11-inning, 9-8 win over the Jersey Shore BlueClaws at Maimonides Park last April 7...The 'Clones last Opening Day on the road also occurred in Wilmington on April 9, 2022...The Blue Rocks emerged with a 5-1 victory...Brooklyn is 7-4 in Opening Day road affairs.


2023 IN REVIEW: Brooklyn claimed a share of the North Division Second Half crown in the South Atlantic League, but ceded the final playoff spot to the Jersey Shore BlueClaws on a head-to-head tiebreaker...Needing a win on the final day of the regular season to clinch a playoff spot, the 'Clones dropped a 6-2 contest to Wilmington...Jersey Shore would outlast the Hudson Valley Renegades, 10-9, in 11 innings to secure the seat...After a 28-37 first-half record, the Cyclones composed a 38-28 mark in the second half to finish the season over .500 at 66-65.


YOUTH IS SERVED: Gilbert Gómez takes over as manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones in 2024...At 32 years of age, the Santo Domingo, D.R. native is the youngest skipper in franchise history...After leading Single-A St. Lucie last summer, Gómez served as manager of Tigres del Licey in the Dominican Winter League (LIDOM)...Became the youngest manager to win a championship in LIDOM history and the second-youngest manager to win a game in Caribbean Series history...Gómez's younger brother, Dariel, played at Double-A Binghamton in the Mets' organization last summer and is currently with the Charleston Dirty Birds of the MLB Partner Atlantic League...Older brother, José, is a scout for the Tampa Bay Rays and general manager for LIDOM's Leones del Escogido...Older brother, Héctor, is a well-known baseball reporter...Gómez also played seven years in New York's farm system, posting a .662 OPS in 537 games.


FAMILIAR FACES: Out of the 30 players on the Cyclones' preliminary roster, 16 of them have previous experience playing on Coney Island...Jeffrey Colón, Joshua Cornielly, Felipe De La Cruz, Jordan Geber, Josh Hejka, Joey Lancellotti, and Jordany Ventura return to the bump, while Drake Osborn and Christian Pregent are holdovers behind the dish...Ryan Clifford, Mateo Gil, William Lugo, D'Andre Smith, and Junior Tilien are back in the infield, as Stanley Consuegra and Omar De Los Santos are set to roam the outfield.


GENIUNE DRAFT: Seven members of last summer's New York Mets' draft class will open the 2024 season with the Cyclones...Pregent returns to the roster, while second-round selection RHP Brandon Sproat and third-round pick two-way player Nolan McLean are scheduled to make their High-A debuts...RHP Noah Hall (7th), INF Nick Lorusso (9th), RHP Ben Simon (13th), and RHP Justin Lawson (15th) round out the group...RHP Dakota Hawkins, who signed as an undrafted free agent, will also start the season in Brooklyn.


KING STANLEY: On the final day of the 2023 regular season, OF Stanley Consuegra broke a tie with C Francisco Álvarez for Brooklyn's single-season home run record (23)...Consuegra (28) also surpassed Álvarez (22) for the franchise record in career home runs on August 23 at Asheville...He and Álvarez are the only two players in franchise history to record a 20-plus home run season...The 23-year-old also broke the franchise's single-season record for extra-base hits (42) and tied the mark for RBI (63) set by Ronny Mauricio in 2021...Consuegra also holds the 'Clones all-time record for RBI (90) and extra-base knocks (62).


DON'T TREAD ON US: Brooklyn's outfield did a marvelous job neutralizing runners on the basepaths in 2023...The Cyclones set a franchise record for outfield assists in a single season with 41...The previous franchise high was 30 set back in the 2006 season...Brooklyn led all High-A teams in outfield assists and registered 5 more than any other squad (Asheville, 36)...Among all MiLB teams, the Cyclones' 41 outfield assists were tied for 7th...Stanley Consuegra and Alex Ramírez tied the team's single-season franchise record for individual assists with 11...Only Greensboro's Sammy Siani (12) had more...The previous single-season high for Brooklyn was 9 held by 6 different players.


CLIFF NOTES: OF Ryan Clifford had an incredible 2023 South Atlantic League season between Asheville and Brooklyn...The 20-year-old ranked 5th in the SAL in home runs (22) and slugging percentage (.486), in addition to sixth in OPS (.824), and tied for sixth in RBI (66)...Clifford is also 3rd in isolated power (.245) and 9th in wOBA (.367) and wRC+ (122).


LUGO LAND: INF William Lugo was red hot over the last several weeks of the 2023 season...Lugo has reached safely in 16 consecutive games dating back to last August 23 and is 18-for-56 at the plate (.321) with 9 runs scored, 5 doubles, 10 RBI, and 10 walks...Since last August 15, Lugo is slashing .321/.404/.432 with a .836 OPS.


DE RECORD SETTER: OF Omar De Los Santos broke INF Walter Rasquin's (32) franchise single-season stolen base record (37) in 2023...The 24-year-old entered as a pinch-runner and caught Hudson Valley napping to steal second base on July 21 to set the mark..Rasquin’s original franchise record was set back in 2017 when Brooklyn played in the short-season New York-Penn League...De Los Santos enters the season fourth on the Cyclones' all-time stolen base list and is one behind OF José Miguel Medina (38) for third...He is also 11 steals shy of matching UTL Jaylen Palmer's (48) all-time record...Since the start of 2022, De Los Santos is tied for eighth across the Minors for swipes (107). 


AMAZIN' STARTS HERE: The Brooklyn Cyclones have several Top 30 prospects according to Baseball America and MLB Pipeline...The 'Clones have four of the Top 30 per BA: Ryan Clifford (No. 5), Brandon Sproat (11), Nolan McLean (15), and Calvin Ziegler (29)...Clifford (4), Sproat (13), McLean (19), and Ziegler (22) all appear on MLB's list, as well...MLB Pipeline also considers Clifford the 93rd-best farmhand in all of baseball...Among MLB Pipeline's list of Top 30 Mets prospects, 16 have experience playing with the Cyclones, including six of the top 10: INF Jett Williams (1), Clifford (4), RHP Christian Scott (5), INF Ronny Mauricio (6), C Kevin Parada (9), and RHP Blade Tidwell (10).
