Athletics 7 Mets 6 Post Game Notes - 8/15/2024

Mets:
  • Suffered their first series loss at home since June 28-30 when they dropped two of three to the Astros...Had won or split their previous four home series.
  • Are 6-3 in rubber games this season.
  • Are 2-8 in their last 10 Interleague games...Were 9-3 in their previous 12 games against American League opponents.
  • Are 21-13 in one-run games this season.
Mark Vientos:
  • Hit an opposite field two-run home run in the third inning to extend the Mets lead to 3-0...Lined a solo home run to right field in the fourth inning to make the score 6-4...It is his second multi home run game of the season (Also: 6/25 vs. Yankees) and the third of his career...Has a .908 OPS over his last 44 games.
Luis Torrens:
  • Doubled home two runs with the bases loaded in the third inning to put the Mets up 5-0...Is now batting .455 (10-22) with 24 RBI with the bases loaded for his career.
Jose Quintana:
  • It was his shortest outing since June 28 against Houston and was just the fifth time in 24 starts that he failed to pitch into the fifth inning.

Tim Healey Newsday: Mets blow big lead, drop series to Athletics "First, the Mets lost control. Then, they lost the lead. Eventually, they lost the game...Outweighing the Mets’ productive day at the plate was an ugly effort from the pitchers, who blew a five-run lead and allowed 12 hits and a season-high 11 walks to one of the worst lineups in the majors."

NY Post: "Early on, the Mets were in a good spot as they got a two-run blast from Mark Vientos — his first of a pair of homers on the day — and a two-run single by Luis Torrens in the third inning to go up 5-0."

NY Daily News: "With the Mets (62-59) up 5-0 after scoring four in the third inning, Quintana had JJ Bleday at two strikes (1-2) with two out. But the left-hander missed up and in with a slurve and Bleday drove the ball over the right field fence for a grand slam, cutting the Mets’ lead to just one run...Huascar Brazobán gave up a run in the fifth and Reed Garrett (7-4) gave up two in the sixth."

Today in Mets History Per Ultimatemets.com:

Born on this date:

Transactions:
New York Mets sold Gerry Arrigo to the Cincinnati Reds on August 16, 1966.

New York Mets signed free agent Jose Reyes on August 16, 1999.

New York Mets traded Mark Little to the Arizona Diamondbacks for P.J. Bevis on August 16, 2002.

National Pastime:

1996

Due to a conflict with the Republican National Convention in San Diego, the first major league game ever played outside of the United States or Canada takes place in Monterrey, Mexico, with the 'home team' Padres out-slugging the Mets at Estadio de Beisbol, 15-10. Fernando Valenzuela, a native of the Mexican city of Navojoa, opens the three-game series and goes six innings to get the victory for the first-place Friars.

2007

Jose Reyes becomes the first infielder and tenth player overall in the modern era (post-1898) to steal sixty bases in three consecutive seasons. The Mets shortstop, who will swipe 78 sacks this season, steals second base in the second inning for the second time in a 10-7 loss to the Pirates at PNC Park.

Baseball Reference:

1987The wind is blowing out at Wrigley Field as the Mets pound the Cubs, 23 - 10, setting a club record for runs scored in a game.

1996San Diego OF Steve Finley homers in the Padres game against the Mets in Monterrey, Nuevo LeónMexico. By doing so, he becomes the first major league player to have homered in three different countries, having previously hit four-baggers in the USA and Canada. The Padres win the first regular-season game to be played outside of the US or Canada, 15 - 10, belting four homers. Leadoff batter Tony Gwynn is 3 for 5 and will repeat it tomorrow in the 7 - 3 loss to the Mets.

2001: The Padres defeat the Mets, 6 - 5. San Diego rookie P Jeremy Fikac gets the win in his major league debut as he strikes out the side in his only inning. In 2004, he will also get a win his final major league appearance in an otherwise unremarkable career.

2017 - Short of infielders because of injuries, the Mets start catcher Travis d'Arnaud at third base in their game against the Yankees. However, as d'Arnaud has never played the position professionally, manager Terry Collins decides to switch him and starting second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera every time a right-handed batter comes up, in order to minimize the chance of a ball actually being hit towards the improvized infielder. The two end up exchanging positions 18 times as the Yankees prevail, 5 - 3, making for an unusual boxscore that reads "Cabrera 2b-3b-2b-3b-2b-3b-2b-3b-2b-3b-2b-3b-2b-3b-2b-3b-2b-3b-2b" and "d'Arnaud 3b-2b-3b-2b-3b-2b-3b-2b-3b-2b-3b-2b-3b-2b-3b-2b-3b-2b-3b".

2018Just two weeks after suffering a 25 - 4 loss, the worst in team history, the Mets turn around and defeat the Phillies, 24 - 4, in the first game of a doubleheader, setting team records for runs and hits (25). Coming on the back of a 16 - 5 win over the Orioles the day before, the win also marks the first time they score at least 15 runs in back-to-back games. Jose Bautista, who does not even start the game, leads the offense with a grand slam and 7 RBIs. However, the Mets return to form in the nitecap, losing 9 - 6.

2021 - By hitting a triple for the MetsPete Alonso ends a record streak of 68 games without the team getting a three-base hit.
