Brian Joura Mets360: "When Tylor Megill and Ryne Stanek combine for seven shutout innings with 12 Ks, you better win. And that’s exactly what happened for the Mets Monday night, as they edged the Blue Jays, 3-2. Combined with a loss by the Braves, the Mets moved into sole possession of the third Wild Card spot."
Mets took a 1-0 lead in the 4th when J.D. Martinez singled in Pete Alonso who walked with 2 out and moved to 2nd when Jose Iglesias was hit by a pitch. After Tylor Megill threw 6 scoreless, he was replaced by Danny Young in the 7th. After getting the fist out, Young hit Davis Schneider with a pitch and allowed a single to Alejandro Kirk. Jose Butto then came in and gave up a single to Ernie Clement to load the bases, hit Leo Jimenez to tie the game at one and the Blue Jays took the lead on a Sac Fly.
NY Post: Mets capitalize on Blue Jays’ costly errors for win to move ahead of Braves in wild-card race. "A day after their nine-game winning streak was snapped, the Mets managed only three hits, but leveraged Jesse Winker’s pinch-hit walk and Francisco Alvarez’s infield single into the tying and go-ahead runs in the eighth."
Tim Healey Newsday: Mets get Tylor Megill's best in strong start, eke out win over Blue Jays. "With a pair of runs in the top of the eighth — the first scoring on a wild pitch, the next on a passed ball...This was just the second time in 13 tries this season that Megill held the opposing team scoreless. The other came on May 28, when he shut out the Dodgers for seven innings.."

The obvious concern is whether Mets will hit enough with Lindor and Vientos both suddenly searching at the plate and McNeil out for season. Onus is on Nimmo and Alonso, especially, to get it going. Nimmo down to .227, almost hard to believe. Alonso continues to struggle w/RISP.
— John Harper (@NYNJHarper) September 10, 2024
That looked like the Ryne Stanek from his best years w/Astros, which would be a huge development for the Mets bullpen. Struck out the side as FB clocked as high as 99.4 mph, per Statcast, with nasty split. Lately seems to have figured out command issues that hurt him this season.
— John Harper (@NYNJHarper) September 10, 2024
So Braves got 2 hits and lost 1-0 while Mets got 3 hits and won 3-2. Potentially a pivotal night in WC race. Mets obviously got some breaks with walks, WP and PB in the 8th but hot/good teams take advantage and that seems to sum up the way they're playing, winning 10 of 11.

Because the Mets only have a small number of games left this season, they plan to wait until next year to honor Ed Kranepool with a uniform patch. They'll wear it for the entire 2025 season.

1963 | In the Mets' 4-2 victory over the Giants at the Polo Grounds, Carlton Willey retires the side in order, getting all three Alou brothers - Jesus, Matty, and Felipe - to make an out. The Dominican trio becomes the first three siblings to bat consecutively in the same inning. |
1969 | At Shea Stadium, the Mets move into first place for the first time in their history. The Amazins, with their doubleheader sweep of Montreal, a 3-2 win in 12 innings in the opener and a 7-1 victory in the nightcap, take a one-game lead over the second-place Cubs, who dropped a 6-2 decision to the Phillies. |
1985 | After Cardinal starter Danny Cox, who appears annoyed by George Foster stepping out of the box several times during the at-bat, hits him with a first-inning pitch causing both teams to charge onto the Shea Stadium field. Howard Johnson, minutes after the teams return to their respective dugouts, blasts a grand slam to give the Mets an eventual 5-4 win and a one-game lead over the Redbirds in the tight NL East race. |
1985 | Keith Hernandez receives a two-minute standing ovation from the Mets fans in his first game back at Shea after testifying in a Pittsburgh courtroom. The New York first baseman, who responds with a run-producing single against his former team, admitted on the witness stand to having used cocaine while playing for the Cardinals. |
