Tim Healey Newsday: Luis Severino, poor defense doom Mets in loss to Atlanta in opening game of pivotal series. "In the series opener and a huge swing game, the Mets did nothing well. Luis Severino pitched poorly (four innings, four runs), the hitters barely hit at all (four hits) and the defense made several misplays (including one error)."
NY Post: Mets’ defense had all kinds of problems in costly performace against Braves. "The Mets finished with four hits and mishandled four Braves batted balls. Such a ratio is rarely conducive to winning."
Brian Joura Mets 360: "Mark Vientos can hold his head high. The rest of the team needs to do some soul searching. It was a disappointing night for the Mets, as they didn’t hit or field particularly well and lost to the Braves, 5-1, Tuesday night in Atlanta."
NY Post: Mets show little fight as Luis Severino implodes in loss to Braves that trims NL wild-card lead. "Orlando Arcia’s squib single leading off the third and Severino’s throwing error on the play started an inning in which the Braves established a 3-0 lead. Michael Harris II’s RBI double brought in the first run before Ozzie Albies singled in another. Starling Marte threw home instead of hitting the cutoff on the play, allowing Albies to reach second. Severino recorded an out, but walked Marcell Ozuna and surrendered a two-out RBI single to Ramon Laureano."
Joel Sherman NY Post: This Braves horror movie look all too familiar for Mets "It is not just that the Mets came to Atlanta and lost on Tuesday night. It is that it all looked familiar. They played poorly in every phase. The Braves played well. Atlanta center fielder Michael Harris was such a Met-killing Chipper off the old block that you could convince me he is going to name his next born child Citi."
NY Post: Mets’ loss comes with Francisco Lindor silver lining "Francisco Lindor stood in the on-deck circle preparing to pinch hit in the ninth inning Tuesday night, but the game ended before he could get that chance. But it was the most positive sign in 1 ½ weeks that Lindor is ready to return, even in perhaps a limited capacity for the Mets."
Francisco Lindor came out on deck to pinch-hit for Tyrone Taylor in the 9th inning.

"We still got a chance to win a series here. You're right, we didn't play well. We gotta turn the page. I know it's gonna be a story because it's here in Atlanta. We gotta go out and do it"

"I would love to see him be able to be himself. I just want him to do what's best for him because that'll be best for us. It would be great, he's an MVP-type player. But also we have to prepare like we're not going to" pic.twitter.com/1XIZ2Bg0Lm

1973 | "I look at the kids over here, the way they're playing, the way they're fighting for themselves, and it tells me one thing: 'Willie, say good bye to America'." - WILLIE MAYS, bidding farewell to his fans at Shea Stadium. Willie Mays Night takes place in Flushing as the Mets honor the fan-favorite player in an emotional 55-minute ceremony at Shea Stadium after their 2-1 victory over the Expos. The 'Say Hey Kid' tells the crowd of more than 50,000 fans, "Just to hear you cheer like this for me and not be able to do anything about it makes me a very sad man. This is my farewell." |
|
|
1984 | New York's pinch-hitter Rusty Staub becomes only the second player to hit a round-tripper as a teenager and one after his 40th birthday when he blasts a walk-off home run off Larry Anderson to give the Mets a 6-4 victory over Philadelphia at Shea Stadium. Ty Cobb was the first major leaguer to accomplish the feat. |
2003 | Friends, family, associates, and former players gather at Shea Stadium on Bob Murphy Appreciation Night to honor the long-time broadcaster. Doing play-by-play for the team since the first game of its inaugural season in 1962, the Hall of Famer calls the last of his more than 6,000 Mets games following the pregame ceremonies. |
2009 | In a position where the team was unable to field a reliable everyday player consistently for decades, David Wright establishes a franchise record by starting his 836th game at third base for the Mets, surpassing his hitting coach and friend Howard Johnson. More than 120 players, beginning in 1962 with Don Zimmer, have appeared at the hot corner for the team, but only ten have appeared in as many as 200 games during the club's 47-year history. |
1964: At Shea Stadium, Jim Maloney fires a one-hitter in the Reds' 3 - 0 win over the Mets. Joe Christopher's 2nd-inning single is the only hit.
1970: At Pittsburgh, Willie Stargell throws out a runner in the 8th and singles home the winner in the 9th to give the Pirates a 4 - 3 win over the Mets. The Bucs increase their National League East lead to 3 1/2 games over the Mets and Cubs, losers to the Phils.
1984: At Shea Stadium, the Mets' Rusty Staub homers to become the second player to homer as a teenager and also at the age of 40. Ty Cobb is the only other, and Gary Sheffield will match the feat in 2009. Staub's blast, a two-run pinch homer, climaxes a four-run 9th inning as the Mets beat Philly, 6 - 4.
1985: With the score tied 4 - 4 in the bottom of the 9th, Davey Lopes walks, steals second and third base, and scores on a pinch single by Chris Speier as the Cubs beat the Mets, 5 - 4. Gary Carter's grand slam accounts for all the Mets' scoring. Lopes has three steals in the game to give him 47 (in just 275 at bats) and he sets the record for most stolen bases by a player over 40. The record was set by Honus Wagner in 1914 with 23. Lopes is officially recorded at 39 but when he signed at age 22 he was afraid he was too old so he set his age back a year.
1998: The fading Mets (88-72) lose another to the Braves, 6 - 5, as Dennis Martinez, the third of seven pitchers, is the winner. Meanwhile, the rampaging Giants top the Rockies to move into a tie with the Mets for the National League wild card.
2008: The Mets stay just ahead in the wild card race, beating the Cubs, 7 - 6. In a losing cause, Micah Hoffpauir goes 5 for 5 and hits his first two big league home runs.
