PRESS RELEASE: DAVID WRIGHT TO HAVE HIS NUMBER #5 RETIRED & ENTER THE METS HALL OF FAME IN A CEREMONY PRESENTED BY NEWYORK-PRESBYTERIAN ON JULY 19 "The New York Mets today announced the team will retire David Wright's No. 5 and he will enter the Mets Hall of Fame in a pre-game ceremony on Saturday, July 19 presented by NewYork-Presbyterian prior to the 4:10 p.m. game against the Cincinnati Reds...'David Wright personified class on and off the field,' said Mets owners Steve and Alex Cohen. 'David is the definition of a Met. He grew up going to Mets Triple-A games in his hometown of Norfolk, VA and was drafted by the organization in 2001. His spectacular career included seven All-Star appearances, two Gold Gloves and two Silver Slugger awards before he played an emotional final game in 2018. For a generation of Mets fans, he was their Tom Seaver..."
Bob Nightengale USA Today: Biggest MLB questions right now: Pete Alonso and Alex Bregman drama, trade rumors swirl. There currently are eight teams showing at least some interest in Alonso, including the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox. But in the game of first base musical chairs where 11 teams have a new first baseman, Alonso is still left standing. He may have no choice but to return to the Mets on a short-term deal with an opt-out.
Manny Gomez NJ .com: Mets aren’t finished: Insider reveals they are ‘still talking about’ adding players. "MLB insider Jeff Passan of ESPN is reporting that the Mets are continuing to look at pieces to add. 'The Mets are still talking about adding an outfielder. And relievers. And a starter,' Passan writes, via ESPN. 'The Winter of Soto is still cooking.'”

ESPN Desportes: LIDOM: Luis Moreno of the Eastern Stars is chosen Rookie of the Year. "Moreno was one of the most solid pitchers of the 2024-25 season in general, being a real surprise for the Dominican winter circuit. In 39.1 innings of work, spread over 11 appearances (10 as a starter), he had an ERA of 1.83 with an ERA+ of 211, 37 strikeouts and 15 walks. His average of hits and walks per innings pitched (WHIP) was 0.97, while his defensive independent pitching (FIP) finished at 2.88. He finished the year with a record of two wins and two losses."

Baseball reference:
2021: The Mets pull off a blockbuster deal, acquiring SS Francisco Lindor and P Carlos Carrasco from the Indians for four younger players: IFs Amed Rosario and Andres Gimenez, P Josh Wolf and OF Isaiah Greene. The Mets are expected to use the bottomless resources of new owner Steven Cohen to sign Lindor to a long-term deal before he becomes a free agent at the end of this season.
Here is just a sampling of the reactions from that day:

Mets trade for All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor@APSE_sportmedia pic.twitter.com/kgEa7dH9ha
Metstradamus: New Kids in Town “This is 4/5ths the Gary Carter trade, and 1/5th the Mike Piazza trade. That final fifth is the part where people say “why did we trade for a shortstop when we had three shortstops?” Amed Rosario is a good player, and Andres Gimenez earned his status as a fan favorite. But nobody pines for Todd Hundley when they talk about Mike Piazza. Hundley was good on his own merit, but Mike Piazza is Mike Piazza.”
Brian Joura Mets360: “While shortstop wasn’t a big hole for the Mets, there’s no doubt that Lindor is an upgrade on the position. While he’s not as good offensively as Mookie Betts, a player to whom he’s frequently compared, Lindor should be a consistent 4-5 fWAR player and those guys simply don’t grow on trees.”
Joel Sherman NY Post: Mets just put themselves in the Yankees’ weight class.
Ken Davidoff NY Post: Francisco Lindor has everything to be face of Mets franchise.
David Lennon Newsday: Steve Cohen promised he would raise the bar for the Mets, and Francisco Lindor is proof of that. “the Steve Cohen Mets reminded everyone Thursday that being good is no longer good enough in Flushing.”
Mike Lupica Mets.com: Mets deliver with long-promised big deal. “Lindor makes the Mets a team to watch again, and who knows, maybe the team to watch in New York City this season. It was that kind of deal that Alderson made on Thursday, for a young star who plays shortstop and just turned 27. Alderson has made big deals before, and so have the Mets. Never has one felt any bigger than this.”
Bradford William Davis NY Daily News: The Mets fleeced Cleveland for Francisco Lindor. “With no shade to any of these four players leaving the Mets, none of them are Lindor and none of them should expect to be Lindor in the future.”
