"Paul Blackburn needed only seven pitches to retire the Miami Marlins‘ first three hitters Wednesday in his first Grapefruit League start of spring training. The one-inning outing might not have looked like much, but to the Mets and Blackburn, it was significant.

NY Post: Starling Marte’s sore knee problem isn’t going away in slow spring training ramp-up. "The concerning part of Marte’s slow ramp-up this spring is that he has been dealing with the knee soreness since last summer, and eight months later there doesn’t seem to be much improvement."
Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Mets Notebook: Brandon Nimmo aiming to play next week, Ronny Mauricio progressing. "Nimmo...who has been battling plantar fasciitis since last May, said he’s at 94%, up from 91 a few days before the Mets’ first full-squad workout. There have been no setbacks in camp thus far, and Nimmo is able to run the bases, swing the bat and take fly balls...Infield prospect Ronny Mauricio...The Mets plan to start using him in games around the middle of March, but that depends on how his knee holds up in these next few weeks. After more than a year removed from baseball, it’s tough for the Mets to know what they can get from Mauricio this season."
Mike Puma NY Post Sports+: Kodai Senga happy to deliver for Mets with his presence more important than ever. "Senga was all smiles through the three-inning session and later told The Post he is ready to begin pitching in games. The right-hander expects that initial Grapefruit League start to occur next week." (subscription required)
Tim Healey Newsday: Mets relievers Drew Smith, Adbert Alzolay have all eyes on 2026 already. "Smith, a longtime Mets mainstay, and Alzolay, recently the Cubs’ closer, are under contract for 2025 but are highly unlikely to see the mound, having had Tommy John surgery last summer. Mired in the middle of a long rehabilitation process, their work now is almost entirely about 2026."

1989 - Washington State University first baseman John Olerud undergoes brain surgery for the removal of an aneurysm. The left-handed first baseman had collapsed on January 11th after a workout. As a result of the aneurysm, he will wear a helmet at all times while on the playing field. Olerud will go on to enjoy a successful 17-season major league career with the Blue Jays, Mets, Mariners, Yankees and Red Sox, winning a batting title in 1993 and two All-Star berths.
