Mets Links:

Jon Heyman NY Post Sports+: Juan Soto is still in $765 million shock as he surprises at Mets camp. "One is that he told folks he was nervous for his first official day in orange and blue. And two, not even he figured he’d get anywhere near that $765 million deal he did get." (subscription required)

NY Post: Juan Soto already used to ‘different vibe’ in spring training after his Mets arrival matches the hype. "As Soto, in his first workout with his new team, participated in conditioning drills Sunday, fans stood behind a chain-link fence and called his name. A large media gathering later followed Soto to Clover Park’s main field to watch him take batting practice. For players new to the scene, it might have seemed like the circus. Soto, already used to it — he helped the Yankees reach the World Series last year — took events in stride."

David Lennon Newsday: Juan Soto arrives at Mets camp, and so do the $765M expectations. "Even with the anticipated transition period that big-money free agents have coming to Metsville, Soto has the big advantage of hopping over from the Bronx. He also has the experience of two trips to the World Series and the ring he won with the Nationals in 2019. That can help lighten the weight of his $765 million contract, to whatever extent it’s possible to do so."

Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Juan Soto doesn’t need to be ‘the guy’ with Mets. "...for the first time in about five years, he didn’t have to answer any questions about where he would be playing in the future...Soto was quick to dispel any notion that he alone can get the Mets to the World Series. While he understands that he’ll be a franchise face and a cornerstone of what the Mets hope is a winning team for years to come, he doesn’t seem to want to be a focal point of the team. If anything, Soto seems to like the fact that he’s on a team with star power."

Mike Puma NY Post: Mets’ Kodai Senga all smiles after passing first spring training hurdle. "PORT ST. LUCIE — The wide smile on Kodai Senga’s face Saturday as he walked off the mound at Clover Field toward the Mets dugout told the story better than any metrics might have...Radar readings weren’t posted during the session, but Jeff McNeil said Senga’s fastball was in the mid-90s."

Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Starling Marte ready for new role as Mets DH with Juan Soto in lineup. "The veteran right fielder was stellar for the Mets in 2022, the first year of his four-year pact, but groin and knee injuries significantly limited his production over the last two years...Now, heading into the final year of his contract, he’ll play a different role for the Mets as a platoon DH and a reserve outfielder...It’s not entirely clear if the two parties are happy with this arrangement or not, and it’s not entirely clear if the Mets tried to trade Marte, or how hard they tried to trade him."
