Box Score: Mets 17 A's 6 Brandon Nimmo CF 2 for 4, double, 2 RBIs, 3 runs scored, 2 walks; Starling Marte, 2 for 3, 2 runs scored, 2 RBIs, 3 walks, 1 K; Francisco Lindor, 2 for 5, Grand Slam HR, double, 7 RBIs, 3 runs scored, 1 walk; Luis Guillorme 2B-SS 2 for 3, 2 runs scored, 1 RBI, 2 walks; Kodai Senga 4.2 innings, 4 runs - all earned, 7 hits, 2 HRs, 4 walks, 7 Ks; Dennis Santana (W,1-0) 2.1 innings, 1 run - earned, 2 hits, 2 Ks;

Mets.com: Mets get 17 walks, 17 runs in win vs. A's "The Mets scored six runs on five walks and just one hit in the second inning of their series opener in Oakland. And as if that wasn't enough, they did it again -- six runs, this time on five walks, two hit batters and a knock -- three innings later. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Mets are the first team to score six or more runs on one or no hits in two separate innings in the same game since at least 1957."

Metstradamus: A Major League Team vs Major League. "So first off, let me lead this off by giving the Mets a lot of credit. They’ve been so overanxious this season in bases loaded situations that it would have been completely on brand for them to turn James Kaprielian into Sandy Koufax at the absolute worst time. But when Kaprielian was walking batter after batter in the second, the Mets stayed patient and took their bases."

Year: 2021; Game#9; Wednesday  Apr 14 NYM 5 Vs. ;PHI; 1; boxscore;  WP: Peterson; LP: Wheeler; Time: 2:50; NIGHT; Attendance: 7,520;  Record: 6-3; Standings: 1; Games up/behind: up 1.5; W;

Brandon Nimmo CF 3 for 5, run scored, 1 K; Francisco Lindor SS 2 for 4, 2 runs scored; Dominic Smith LF 3 for 5, 1 RBI, 2Ks;  Pete Alonso 1B 0 for 3, RBI, 1K; Jeff McNeil 2B 1 for 3, 1K; Michael Conforto RF 0 for 2, run scored, HBP, walk; James McCann C 3 FOR 4, HR, 2 RBIs, run scored; Luis Guillorme 3B 0 for 4, 1K; David Peterson P 0 for 2, 1 K; (W, 1-1) 6 innings, 2 hits, 1 run – earned, HR, 10Ks; Jeurys Familia 1/3 inning, 1 hit, 1 walk, no runs; Aaron Loup 1.2 innings, no runs, no hits, 2 Ks; Edwin Diaz 1 inning, no hits, no runs, 2Ks;

NY Post: Brandon Nimmo thriving as Mets’ leadoff man. “Nimmo has registered an NL-best .464 batting average (13-for-28) with a .571 slugging percentage, despite still looking for his first home run.”

Newsday: In the first inning, after Nimmo slapped an opposite-field single, Lindor followed with a base hit and Smith lined an RBI single for the quick 1-0 lead. Pete Alonso made it 2-0 by hitting into a double play, and with David Peterson cruising, that seemed like it would be enough.

NY Post: Last week in Philadelphia, David Peterson got rocked. In the rematch Wednesday night, Peterson rocked. The Mets left-hander matched a career-high with 10 strikeouts and gave up just two hits over six innings while mowing down the Phillies in a 5-1 win at Citi Field.

NY Post: Aaron Loup comes through for Mets after layoff. “Loup induced a key double play in the seventh inning — and got five outs in all — to ensure a brilliant outing by starter David Peterson didn’t get wasted in the Mets’ 5-1 win over the Phillies at Citi Field.”

Metstradamus: James McCann had himself a night with three hits, and in the 8th inning he put the cherry on top of the sundae with a two run HR, his first ding-dong as a Met. Edwin Diaz knifed through the order in the ninth, and also found a way to get Met fans excited about his arrival into a game with an entrance song that makes me want to go save the Princess from the clutches of Donkey Kong.

Jason Fry Faith and Fear in Flushing: The Shadow of the Past  - “The Mets won, and in convincing style. That won’t banish every fury or scatter every shadow, but it sure does cut them down to size”

Baseball Reference: In the 6th inning of today's 6 - 5 loss to Chicago, the Mets' Dave Kingman hits what will become widely regarded as the longest home run ever hit in Wrigley Field, estimated at 600 feet in many of the next day's press accounts, with the putative "paper of record" going as high as 630. Some cold water is applied to these claims by longtime Cubs' broadcaster Jack Brickhouse, speaking in 1982 with Paul Susman of Baseball Digest: "Brickhouse revealed that the ball was greatly helped by a strong wind of about 35 miles per hour. Brickhouse estimated Kingman's blast in reality went about 500 feet." To be fair to Kingman, the Cubs' own scoresheet for this game estimates "530 to 550 feet," which in conjunction with researcher Bill Jenkinson's assertion of 530 feet as the distance between home plate and the point of obstruction, would suggest a typo or simple misreading as the culprit in the inflated Times estimate.
