From the Mets 4 Cardinals 2 Post Game Notes 4/28/2024:

  • Mets
    • Earned their second walk-off win of the season and their first against St. Louis since May 19, 2022 (Pete Alonso walk-off homer)...The club's 25 walk-off wins since 2021 are tied with Colorado for the seventh-most in the majors during that span.
    • Are 18-7 (.720) in extra-inning games since 2022, the best extra-inning winning percentage in the majors during that span.
    • Have eight comeback victories this season, tied for fourth in the majors.
  • Mark Vientos
    • Slugged a walk-off two-run homer in the 11th...Was his first career walk-off homer and RBI of his career...Was the club's first walk-off homer in the 11th inning or later since Dominic Smith slugged a walk-off three-run homer in the 11th on September 29, 2019 vs. Atlanta.

  • Reed Garrett
    • Joins Jesse Orosco (August 1983) as the only relief pitcher in franchise history to win five games in a month...Is the first reliever with five wins in a month since Alex Reyes won five games in September, 2021.
    • Has seven multi-strikeout games in relief, tied for second-most in the majors...His 27 strikeouts leads all major league relievers.
  • Jose Quintana
    • Threw 8.0 innings today, the longest start by a Met since Justin Verlander threw 8.0 innings of one-run ball on July 19 vs. Chicago-AL...Is his longest as a Met surpassing his previous high of 7.0 innings set on September 5, 2023 vs. Washington and is his longest start since September 17, 2022 vs. Cincinnati with St. Louis (Also: 8.0 IP).
  • Francisco Lindor: Put the Mets on the board with a solo homer in the sixth...Is batting .314/.375/.608 with four homers over his last 13 games and is batting .324 (12-37) with six extra-base hits over his last 10 games a left-handed batter...Batted .080 (4-50) in his first 10 games as a left-handed batter...Was his 14th career game with multiple stolen bases.

Mike Puma NY Post: Mark Vientos walks off Mets with homer in 11th for thrilling win over Cardinals. "The Mets had floundered offensively for most of the afternoon, but Vientos with one 11th-inning jolt offered absolution, delivering a two-run walk-off homer in a 4-2 victory at Citi Field that prevented a Cardinals three-game sweep."

NY Daily News: "Vientos’ heroics nearly were not possible. The Mets began the game 0-for-15 with runners in scoring position and were down 2-1 in the 11th when Harrison Bader lined a two-out RBI single on an 0-2 pitch from Liberatore to tie the game."

Brian Joura Mets360: "Jose Quintana got the start and had a rough first inning, where he threw 26 pitches. But he settled down and became the first Mets pitcher to throw a pitch in the eighth inning. He finished with 8 IP and 1 ER but did not factor into the decision."

Tim Healey Newsday: Jose Quintana's gem, Mark Vientos' walk-off homer carry Mets over Cardinals. Jose Quintana was 7 2⁄3 innings and 95 pitches into his outing, the best from any Mets pitcher this season, when Mendoza made that familiar walk to the mound with Adam Ottavino ready and waiting in the bullpen...Mendoza said: 'I left the dugout and I was pretty sure I was going to go to Adam. But because of the way he was throwing, the two lefties he got there and the conviction in that conversation on the mound, I was like, OK, all right, he’s your hitter. It’s your game.'”

Braves 4 Mets 0 - Post Game Notes

  • Mets: Were shut out for the fifth time this season...Was their first time being shut out by Atlanta since August 16, 2022 and the first time at Citi Field since July 26, 2021.
  • David Peterson: Has suffered the loss in three of his last four starts.

Brian Joura Mets360: "David Peterson started off strong but the wheels came off in the fifth inning, as the Braves scored four runs and ended up winning a rain-shortened game, 4-0, Friday night at Citi Field."

Metstradamus: "But in the fifth inning, Peterson was destroyed. He gave up a single to Eddie Rosario and a double to Kevin Pillar with one out. Then after getting Michael Harris on a fielders choice at the plate after nine pitches, he had nothing left for Ronald Acuna Jr. He threw an absolute meatball to Acuna on the first pitch, and he smacked it to left field for an RBI single to make it 1-0..."

NY Post: "The Mets lost for the fifth time in six games, a night after they barely avoided getting swept by the woeful Nationals....Peterson’s night unraveled in the fifth, when he surrendered a three-run homer to Matt Olson that buried the Mets in a 4-0 hole."

Tim Healey Newsday: Rain cuts Mets short right after David Peterson allows four runs in fifth inning vs. Atlanta. "Within seconds of Max Fried setting down the Mets in the bottom of the inning, which made the game official, umpires requested the tarp. Eighty-eight minutes later, MLB decided the game was over."

NY Post: Jacob deGrom’s bat went cold Wednesday night, so the Mets lost

Brian Joura Mets360: “The Red Sox came in to this brief two-game series with one of the best offenses in the game. So, the Mets hold them to a total of three runs and somehow end up getting swept. Wednesday night the Mets lost, 1-0, and stop me if you’ve heard this before but they wasted another big performance by Jacob deGrom.” (Subscription required)

Deesha Thosar NY Daily News: “For the second straight night, the loudest noise from the Citi Field crowd came in the form of boos. The home crowd of 8,051 fans didn’t just restrict their boos for Francisco Lindor, though he heard it loudly after he struck out in the sixth. This time the jeers were aimed at Michael Conforto, Dominic Smith, James McCann and just about anyone that didn’t capitalize with men on base – a trend that fans are utterly exhausted of seeing, especially when their ace is on the mound.”

Newsday.com:  “Pivetta walked the first two batters in the first, including leadoff man Brandon Nimmo, who returned after missing a game following a cortisone shot in his sore right hip. But Pete Alonso struck out (for the sixth at-bat in a row), Conforto hit a flyout to left and Davis bounced into a 6-4 forceout.”

NY Post: Steven Matz and late magic help Mets avoid getting swept. "Going a season-high seven innings, Matz tamed the Brewers’ hot bats — they had scored 18 runs on 28 hits over the first two games of the series — and the Mets continued an early-season trend of scoring in the late innings, leading to a 5-2 victory at Citi Field Sunday afternoon...A Ben Gamel two-base error led to pinch-hitter J.D. Davis’ go-ahead single in the seventh, and backup catcher Tomas Nido, recalled earlier in the day from Triple-A Syracuse after Travis d’Arnaud was designated for assignment, stroked a two-run double in the eighth."

Down 3-0 in the 7th, Juan Lagares bases loaded double tied it up at 3.  Carlos walked two in the 8th and allowed an RBI single to Mike Morse as the Marlins went on to win 4-3.

NY Post: Bullpen’s scoreless streak ends as Mets fall to Marlins. After the Mets bullpen had run its scoreless streak to 17 ²/₃ innings, Carlos Torres left a pitch over the plate in the eighth inning Tuesday that Michael Morse hammered to center, and Juan Lagares’ throw home was a tad behind go-ahead run Martin Prado. And this time the Mets had no answer in the ninth...The rookie [Rafael] Montero, who was making a spot start to provide extra rest for the rotation, took a shutout into the sixth, but never got through the inning, allowing four singles that helped give the Marlins a 3-0 lead. J.T. Realmuto’s RBI single with two outs ended Montero’s night at 85 pitches. Buddy Carlyle entered and uncorked a wild pitch that scored the Marlins’ third run."
