Brian Joura Mets 360: If you like pitching and/or defense, this was not the game for you, as the Mets booted the ball time and time again and the pitchers allowed 11 ER in a 16-4 loss that was not as close as the score indicated.(subscription required).

Deesha Thosar NY Daily News: The Mets (7-6) committed four errors that led to five unearned runs on Wednesday night. One of those mistakes belonged to J.D. Davis, who made his third error in two days at third base, which represented the turning point of the game. In the fourth inning, instead of turning an inning-ending double play on a Javier Baez grounder right into his glove, the ball fell out of his hands and trickled behind him, between his legs. By the time he found the ball and fired a throw to second, it was too late.

Mike Puma NY Post: Javier Baez put the exclamation on this night with a sixth-inning grand slam against Trevor Hildenberger, extending the Cubs’ lead to 14-4, but the Mets were sunk even before the inning started.

Metstradamus: The highlight of the night was Luis Guillorme grinding out an 8 pitch at-bat down by 12 runs in the ninth inning as the last out. Seriously, I love that guy.

SNY.TV: What's next. The Mets and Cubs square off again on Thursday night at 7:40 p.m., with Joey Lucchesi starting for the Mets against Cubs righty Trevor Williams.

1970

On the day he is presented with his Cy Young Award, Mets' fireballer Tom Seaver ties a major league record by whiffing 19 Padres, including the last ten he faces, to gain a 2-1 win at Shea Stadium. Batterymate Jerry Grote sets the major league mark with ten consecutive putouts in a game for a catcher.

2008

In a scheduling oddity, both New York big league teams play in Chicago, with the Mets playing the Cubs in a matinee, and the Yankees taking on the White Sox in an evening tilt. This unusual occurrence marks the first time in 11+ years that two teams from one city have both played as the visitors in the same city on the same date, a quirk likely necessitated due to the Pope's weekend visit to the Bronx, whose appearance included a mass at Yankee Stadium two days ago.

Baseball Reference:

1962 - The Pittsburgh Pirates win their 10th straight game, edging the New York Mets, 4 - 3, and matching the major-league record to start a season, while the Mets tie a National League record by opening 0-9.

1966 - The Braves win their first game in Atlanta by beating the Mets, 8 - 4.
