Alvarez Propels Spiedies Over Patriots on Spiedie Saturday
BINGHAMTON, NY – Francisco Alvarez's sacrifice fly to center field scoring Zach Ashford in the 10th propelled the Binghamton Spiedies (19-30) to a 3-2 walk off win over the Somerset Patriots (31-19) at Mirabito Stadium on Saturday night.
Ashford started off as the ghost runner in the 10th and moved up on a bunt single by Wyatt Young. After Brett Baty struck out, Alvarez roped a line drive to center off Patriots reliever Steven Jennings (0-2) and Ashford scored the winning run.
Yeizo Campos (4-1) picked up the win after striking out the side in the top half of the 10th.
Anthony Volpe laced a leadoff home run to left field off Ponies starter Alex Valverde and Somerset had an early 1-0 lead. Volpe now has six homers on the season. The Patriots then doubled their lead with Max Burt's fourth homer, a solo shot off the batter's eye in center in the fifth.
Binghamton cut the deficit in half in the sixth with an RBI fielder's choice from Carlos Cortes which scored Alvarez. Ashford's RBI single that plated Manny Rodriguez in the seventh tied the game at two. It was Ashford's 14th RBI of the season.
Valverde pitched five and two thirds innings giving up six hits and two runs while walking and two and striking out nine. His nine strikeouts tied a season high.
Hunter Parsons pitched one and a third perfect innings in his AA debut and Josh Hejka worked out of two separate jams in the eighth and ninth giving up two hits and a walk while striking out one.
