Good Morning.  Mets beat Brewers 5-4, Brooklyn wins, McCann makes rehab start in Binghamton loss, Syracuse and St. Lucie also lose.

Nick Plummer (0-2, RBI, BB, R): Gave the Mets the lead with a fielder's choice in the eighth...Had an outfield assist to cut down the would-be tying run in the ninth inning.

NY Post: Mets capitalize on Brewers’ blunders in comeback win to take series. "They needed to be the better defensive team, and they were. The game was saved technically by Edwin Diaz, but in reality by rookie Nick Plummer, Pete Alonso and Tomas Nido. Not the defensive trio you would expect."

Brian Joura Mets360.com: "The Brewers gifted the Mets the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning and got a runner thrown out at the plate in the top of the ninth, handing the Mets a 5-4 win Thursday night at Citi Field. With the win, the Mets take the series and pick up a half game on the idle Braves."

Jon Heyman NY Post: "MLB commissioner Rob Manfred spoke Thursday on a number of issues at the conclusion of the owners’ meetings at the league’s headquarters in Midtown...Manfred affirmed that the experimental use of the pitch clock in the minors has been a success (it has helped shave off 24 minutes per game), but stopped short of advocating for rules changes, including a banning of the shift.... Though they are continuing to experiment with robot umps in the minors, it’s “not an issue for this year”

1962

In a play that is indicative of the struggling Mets, first baseman Marv Throneberry's apparent first-inning triple becomes an out on an appeal play for missing second base in an 8-7 loss to the Cubs at the Polo Grounds. When New York manager Casey Stengel questions the call, he is told by the umpire, according to legend, "Don't bother arguing, Casey, he missed first base, too."

1962

Gene Woodling becomes the first major leaguer to play for both the Yankees and the Mets. In his National League debut, the 38 year-old outfielder goes 2-for-4, scoring two runs for the new expansion team in an 8-7 loss to the Cubs at the Polo Grounds.

 

1974

After completing the first 1000 games in franchise history with a winning percentage of .332, the Mets compile a 517-482-1 record in their next thousand contests. During the span, that includes Tom Seaver winning 12% of the team's victories, New York wins two National League pennants and a World championship.

1976

At Shea Stadium, Dave Kingman hits a walk-off homer to give the Mets a 1-0 victory over the Dodgers. Sky King's game-ending blast comes off Charlie Hough in the 14th inning.

 

2003

Mets starter Jae Seo and two relief pitchers, David Weathers and Armando Benitez, combine to one-hit Florida, 5-0. The contest is the third consecutive one-hitter the team has played; Steve Trachsel limited the Angels to one single two days ago, and last night, Dontrelle Willis beat New York, 1-0, yielding just one safety.

2005

In a 13-6 loss to Cleveland, the Diamondbacks become the first team since 1969 to allow ten runs in an inning in consecutive games. The eventual 1969 World Champion Mets accomplished the dubious feat in just one day when Houston swept a doubleheader at Shea Stadium.

 

2008

After a 9-6 victory against the Angels in the first game of a West Coast road trip, the Mets fire manager Willie Randolph, pitching coach Rick Peterson, and first-base coach Tom Nieto, shortly after 3 a.m. Eastern time. The team's 18th manager, who compiled a 302-253 record in 3+ seasons with New York, will be replaced by bench coach Jerry Manuel on an interim basis until the end of the season.

1962 - Chicago Cubs outfielder Lou Brock hits a home run into the right-center field bleachers at the Polo Grounds, 460 feet from home plate, in the first game of a Chicago doubleheader sweep over the New York Mets, 8 - 7 and 4 - 3. Known more for his speed than his power, Brock becomes the second player to reach that section of seats. Joe Adcock was the first.

2005: Former Red Sox Brian Daubach starts at first base for the Mets, drawing three walks and scoring two runs one day after being called up from Triple-A Norfolk. Daubach was drafted by the Mets in the 17th round way back in 1990, but this is his first big league game for the club.

2009: Matt Wieters of the Baltimore Orioles, the 2008 Minor League Player of the Year, hits the first home run of his career in the O's 6 - 4 win over the New York Mets.
