Game Recap and Highlights: deGrom Strikes Out 6 in 3 Scoreless Innings, St. Lucie wins

St. Lucie beats Daytona 5-4 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 8, 2022) – New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom made his second rehab start for the St. Lucie Mets on Friday against the Daytona Tortugas at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. (Box Score)

DeGrom threw 3.0 shutout innings and struck out six batters in the Mets 5-4 victory. DeGrom scattered three hits and did not walk a batter. He threw 36 pitches and 29 for strikes. A sellout crowd of 3,379 showed up in Daytona to watch deGrom, who grew up 20 minutes away in DeLand. 

DeGrom has now tossed 4.2 innings of shutout ball with 11 strikeouts across two rehab appearances for St. Lucie this week. 

The Mets held a 5-1 lead with two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the ninth. The Tortugas roared back to score three runs against Miguel Alfonseca and put the tying run on second base. Trey McLoughlin came on from the bullpen and struck out Michel Triana to end the game and clinch the victory. 

Raul Beracierta had a big night at the plate for the Mets. He went 3 for 4 with a home run, double, three RBI and two runs. He homered in the seventh inning for the second straight day. 

Justin Guerrera went 2 for 3 with a walk and RBI. 

Keyshawn Askew (2-0) followed deGrom and pitched 4.2 innings of one-run ball with a career-high nine strikeouts. 

The four Mets pitchers combined to strike out the Tortugas 18 times. 

The Mets (47-31, 7-6) and Tortugas (33-45, 4-9) play the fifth game of their series on Saturday. First pitch at Jackie Robinson Ballpark is 7:05 p.m.
