Portland with 11-Run First Inning, Defeats Binghamton Thursday Night
BINGHAMTON, NY – Led by an 11-run first inning, the Portland Sea Dogs (7-2, 37-41) defeated the Binghamton Rumble Ponies 16-1 on Thursday night at Mirabito Stadium. Portland has now taken the first three games of the series.
Alex Binelas and Ceddanne Rafaela took the first pitches they saw from Ponies starter Alec Kisena (2-7) over the fence and the Sea Dogs had a quick 2-0 lead. The first inning was capped off by a three-run shot by Stephen Scott, his first of the season and Portland led 11-0.
Nick Sogard blasted a two-run homer to make it 13-0 in the second and a three-run home run from Izzy Wilson increased the lead to 16-0 in the third.
The Ponies pitchers then kept the Sea Dogs in check, holding them scoreless over the final six innings. Grant Hartwig, in his Ponies debut, pitched three scoreless innings giving up two hits while walking and striking out two.
Hunter Parsons also delivered a strong relief outing pitching two scoreless frames giving up a hit and a walk with four strikeouts.
Binghamton (3-6, 31-47) broke the shutout in the ninth on an RBI single from Zach Ashford scoring Wyatt Young, who reached on a double. Ashford finished the night 3-4 with a double and an RBI.
The Rumble Ponies will continue their series against Portland on Friday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 PM on NewsRadio 1290 WNBF and 92.1 FM.
POSTGAME NOTES: Cody Bohanek registered his first hit as a Rumble Pony and pitched a perfect ninth inning… Nick Meyer picked up his first hit with the Rumble Ponies with a single in the sixth… Luke Ritter went 2-3.
