Game Recap: St. Lucie Mets Come Back Late to Beat Tortugas, 3-2

Bullpen pitches 5.0 shutout innings 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 7, 2022) – The St. Lucie Mets rallied late to defeat the Daytona Tortugas 3-2 on Thursday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. (Box Score)

Trailing 2-1 in the seventh, the Mets got a solo home run from Raul Beracierta to tie the game 2-2. 

The Mets took a 3-2 lead in the eighth without a hit. Omar De Los Santos led off with a walk, stole second base, stole third base and scored on a wild pitch with two outs. 

Mets reliever Raimon Gomez pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to get his second save. Gomez gave up just one single and struck out four batters, including the final two to end the game. 

Reyson Santos, Jace Beck and Saul Gonzalez combined for three scoreless innings of relief. Gonzalez (2-0) earned the win by pitching the seventh inning. 

Mets starter Joel Diaz put together his best performance of the season. The 18-year-old who is the Mets No. 10 prospect held the Tortugas to two runs over the first four innings. He walked one and struck out four. 

The Mets won despite being outhit 8-4. Beracierta went 2 for 4. His homer was his sixth of the season. 

The Mets improved to 14-3 vs. Daytona this season. 

The Mets (46-31, 6-6) and Tortugas (33-44, 4-8) play again in Daytona on Friday. Jacob deGrom will start the game for St. Lucie on rehab assignment. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.  The game is sold out. Fans can listen on internet radio at www.stluciemets.com.
