Spiedies Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short on Saturday Night
BINGHAMTON, NY – Down 3-1 in the ninth, the Binghamton Spiedies (12-25, 40-66) tacked on one run in ninth but left runners on first and third in the frame and fell to the Altoona Curve 3-2 on Saturday night. Altoona has now taken four out five games in the series.
Jeremy Vasquez walked with one out in the ninth which led to a Matt Winaker single putting runners on first and third. Wyatt Young drove in Vasquez to cut the Curve lead to 3-2. The Spiedies then could not capitalize as Johneshwy Fargas struck out and Ronny Mauricio grounded out to second to end the game.
Altoona (19-19, 52-55) got on the board in the first courtesy of a Malcom Nuñez sacrifice fly plating Nick Gonzales. Nuñez also hit the go-ahead home run in the sixth off Ponies reliever Hunter Parsons (L, 0-2) putting the Curve ahead 2-1.
Matt Winaker's RBI single in the fourth tied the game at one as Luke Ritter came around to score. Winaker finished the night 2-3 with a walk and RBI while reaching base three times.
Harol González pitched four innings giving up three hits, a run and a walk while striking out four after coming off the 60-Day IL.
Tommy Hunter pitched 1 scoreless inning allowing 1 hit with 2 Ks in a Major League rehab stint.
Altoona's Aaron Shortridge (1-3) got his first win of the season going five innings giving up four hits and a run while walking two and striking out four.
The Spiedies will conclude their series with the Altoona Curve on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM with pregame coverage beginning at 12:50 PM on NewsRadio 1290 WNBF and 92.1 FM.
