READING, PA – After falling behind 2-0 after six, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (19-30, 47-71) scored eight runs over the seventh and eighth and came back to defeat the Reading Fightin Phils 8-3 on Saturday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. The Ponies have now taken four out of five games in the series.
Entering the seventh inning trailing 2-0, Carlos Cortes led off the frame with a triple into right field bringing Luke Ritter up to the plate. On a 1-2 pitch, Ritter launched a homerun into left field off Reading starter Andrew Painter to tie the game at two. It was Ritter's 12th long ball of the season.
In the eighth, the Ponies exploded for six runs. Jake Mangum reached on an infield single and got to second on a throwing error. Cortes singled and Ritter walked which loaded the bases for Brandon McIlwain. McIlwain was hit by a pitch and the Ponies had a 3-2 lead. Hayden Senger worked a walk to increase the lead to 4-2 then the dagger came from Jeremy Vasquez. His bases-clearing double to left centerfield off Taylor Lehman (1-1) put Binghamton ahead 7-2. Then Nic Gaddis finished the frame with an RBI single of his own.
Reading (24-26, 53-66) scored its first two runs in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Jhailyn Ortiz and an RBI single from Aldrem Corredor in the sixth. Corredor also added a long homerun to right in the ninth.
Ponies starter Garrison Bryant went six innings giving up four hits and two runs with a walk and strikeouts. Jesus Vargas (2-8) pitched the final three innings surrendering two hits and a run with two strikeouts.
The Ponies will conclude their series against Reading. Sunday's game is scheduled for 5:15 PM with pregame coverage beginning at 5:00 PM on the WNBF Rumble Ponies Radio Network.
