Mets Open workouts begin today in Port St. Lucie. "The workouts are open to the general public starting at 9:30 a.m. The workouts take place daily throughout spring, including on home game days. Entry is free and parking is also free on non-game days. There will be a $15 charge to park for open workouts on game days."

Yesterday Buck Showalter gave his opening Spring Training Press Conference.  Here were some of the highlights:

NY Post: Buck Showalter puts Mets’ sights on winning NL East, having ‘something to finish’.

Mike Puma NY Post: Mets plan to split up Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander to start season. “Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer are the prime candidates to start the March 30 opener at Miami. Whoever isn’t selected for that spot could be bumped to No. 3 in the rotation, aligning that pitcher to start the home opener on April 6.”

NY Post: Mets closer Edwin Diaz’s goal is to repeat dominant 2022 season.

NY Post: The Mets depth chart entering spring training.

NY Post: NL East spring training preview: Check out the Mets’ competition.

SNY.TV: PECOTA projections have 2023 Mets winning NL East, among top two World Series favorites. “The Mets' simulated won/loss record is 97.2-64.8. That would put them about five games ahead of the Atlanta Braves, whose simulated won/loss record is 91.8-70.2, with the Philadelphia Phillies at 89.5-72.5.”

Danny Abriano SNY.TV: The case for Brett Baty winning Mets' third base job out of spring training. "Mets should strongly consider giving Baty the bulk of the starts at the hot corner from the jump." Danny argues that “this is something the Mets should be doing because it's in their best interest this season and going forward.”

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies announced their 2023 Coaching Staff yesterday: "Manager Reid Brignac returns, joined by Pitching Coach AJ Sager, Hitting Coach Darin Everson, Bench Coach Mariano Duncan, and Development Coach Jeremy Cologna."

SNY announces 2023 Mets spring training schedule. “Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling and Steve Gelbs together and on the call for SNY’s opening spring game on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 6:10 p.m.”

From National Pastime.com:

1961

Donald M. Grant, chairman and a minority owner of the Mets, offers Branch Rickey a contract to become the general manager of the new National League expansion team. After the former GM of the Browns, Cardinals, Dodgers, and Pirates turns down the job, George Weiss, who filled the same role with the Yankees from 1947 to 1960, accepts the position.

2001

After turning down the Mets' offer of salary arbitration that at the very least would have been worth $2 to $3 million, Bobby Jones signs a one-year free-agent deal with the Padres for only $625,000. The 31 year-old right-hander, 11-6 last year with New York, will lose 19 games for the Padres this season.

2016

"Baseball is known as our national pastime, but the game has deep roots and a rich history here in New York State. From the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in storied Cooperstown to the Mets and Yankees — the pinnacles of Major League Baseball, to our recently crowned Little League World Series champions from Maine-Endwell, New York State is clearly the epicenter of baseball greatness. It is time that we formally recognize baseball as our official state sport." - JAMES SEWARD, New York state senator.

New York State Sen. James Seward (R-Milford), thanks to a suggestion from a group of fourth-graders at Cooperstown Elementary School, announces he has introduced legislation (S.4288) to designate baseball as New York’s official state sport. In a press release, Hall of Fame president Jeff Idelson says he "enthusiastically supports” the proposed bill, citing Cooperstown serves as the spiritual home of baseball.

Baseball Reference:

2011 - The Mets bring back a figure from the past, signing reliever Jason Isringhausen to a minor league deal coupled with an invitation to spring training. Isringhausen is attempting a comeback from Tommy John surgery at age 38. He was part of the Mets' vaunted "Big Three" in the mid-1990s along with Bill Pulsipher and Paul Wilson: the minor league standouts were supposed to anchor the Mets' pitching staff for the next decade, but all three fell victim to arm injuries, and none of them had much success in the Big Apple.

Two Years ago today, Mets signed Kevin Pillar - NY Post: “Pillar, 32, slashed .288/.336/.462 last season with the Red Sox and Rockies. Once a premier defensive player, Pillar has declined in recent seasons — he was minus-two in outs above average last season, according to Baseball Savant, which placed him in the 11th percentile among MLB outfielders.”
