SNY.TV: Mets takeaways from Friday's game against Nationals - "Max Scherzer... retired the first six batters he faced, as his fastball reached 96 mph. Then, things got crazy...In the third inning, Scherzer allowed his first hit on a tapper to third base...Scherzer committed a balk, Luis Guillorme made an error, and a pitch clock violation (that Scherzer disagreed with) negated a double play...Scherzer allowing a few hits (including a two-run homer), Guillorme making another error, and reliever David Griffin letting the roof cave in."
Newsday:
- Mets' Max Scherzer glad for his messy outing vs. Nationals at spring training
- The Mets still haven't replaced one key pitcher from last year "The Mets will miss swingman Trevor Williams, who signed with the Nationals to become a starter...The Mets have several candidates to fill the Williams role, Showalter said, including Joey Lucchesi and Elieser Hernandez...Then again, the Mets might elect to not carry a swingman/long reliever at all, especially with a bunch of traditional relievers competing for just a couple of bullpen spots."

Eric talked about being positive all the time, how "he sees his job as helping players such as Pete Alonso manage their swings, not rebuild them" and regarding Ronny Mauricio: "He’s a very special talent. He’s showing you right now what he can do, and he’s hungry. I’m happy for him, and he deserves everything he’s about to get." (subscription required)
Joel Sherman NY Post Sports+: How Justin Verlander’s evolution as a pitcher, teammate and person could make him baseball’s last 300-game winner. "Verlander has 244 wins. He is 56 away from 300...Verlander has remade himself in the second chapter of his career — different arm slot, different areas he attacks in the zone, different use of his arsenal — but he remains a power pitcher. His 95.1 mph average fastball was MLB’s 17th-best."(subscription required)
Mets.com:
- Wrestling, impressions and a concert violinist: Inside Mets' talent show -"As a team-bonding exercise, Showalter said, the talent show can actually be instructive, allowing him to see sides of players’ personalities that don’t normally surface...This year, Showalter purposely held the show at a point in camp when the first of several “lulls” set in -- the excitement of report date has largely worn off, as has the anticipation of games. The Mets will receive a reprieve from the schedule on Monday, when they have their first team off-day, after which more than a dozen players will depart for the World Baseball Classic."
- Mets' top prospect thrilled to be back behind plate "For the first time in six months on Friday, Francisco Álvarez strapped on his leg guards and chest protector and crouched behind home plate in a baseball game. Álvarez had not caught in a formal game since late last September, after he completed rehabbing a right ankle injury."

Jon Heynam NY Post: Padres primed to be MLB’s greatest show amid unprecedented turnaround. "if anyone is as excited as the fans, who reserved 150,000 spots for the team’s one-day Fanfest and are expected to sell out the season, it is the players, who also can hardly believe their good fortune...Juan Soto may be the game’s best hitter, Manny Machado the best fielder and Fernando Tatis Jr. the best all-around talent."
