Mike Puma NY Post: Joey Lucchesi throws seven shutout innings after lengthy MLB absence as Mets crush Giants “Lucchesi not only became the first Mets starting pitcher to record an out in the seventh inning this season, but also he placed an exclamation on his performance by striking out the side in the frame. Overall, he struck out nine and allowed four hits and two walks over 97 pitches.”

Brian Joura Mets360: "Pete Alonso once again was the offensive star, as he homered and drove in four runs for the second straight game. His homer was to straightaway center field in the fifth inning, a two-run blast. He added a two-run single in the ninth. Alonso now has 10 HR and 23 RBIs on the season."

Texas Rangers claimed Darren O'Day of the New York Mets on waivers on April 22, 2009.

1970

On the day he is presented with his Cy Young Award, Mets' fireballer Tom Seaver ties a major league record by whiffing 19 Padres, including the last ten he faces, to gain a 2-1 win at Shea Stadium. Batterymate Jerry Grote sets the major league mark with ten consecutive putouts in a game for a catcher.

2008

In a scheduling oddity, both New York big league teams play in Chicago, with the Mets playing the Cubs in a matinee, and the Yankees taking on the White Sox in an evening tilt. This unusual occurrence marks the first time in 11+ years that two teams from one city have both played as the visitors in the same city on the same date, a quirk likely necessitated due to the Pope's weekend visit to the Bronx, whose appearance included a mass at Yankee Stadium two days ago.

Baseball Reference:

1962 - The Pittsburgh Pirates win their 10th straight game, edging the New York Mets, 4 - 3, and matching the major-league record to start a season, while the Mets tie a National League record by opening 0-9.

1966 - The Braves win their first game in Atlanta by beating the Mets, 8 - 4.
